Learned marlinspike (splicing, whipping, etc) from Canadian Power Squadron years ago.

All my friends come to me for their rope needs and what-knot!

I work in buildings and use my keys throughout the day; I went through about 4 of those retractable key chains that just kept falling apart. I needed something that was secure and easy to get to.

Here's a key chain that I made out of a monkey's fist, I keep it next to my phone on my hip.
It stays put all day long under my belt with no clip and when I need to use my keys, I just push down with my thumb and it comes right out. Just another use for splicing.

Spring lay is cable with manilla rope intwined in the cable to give more flex when tying up ships.

Splicing and knot work is a skill I learned in the Navy and has come in extreamly handy over the years, I highly recomend all boaters learn it to some degree.

According to 92% of those that voted, they would splice line to use on their vessels.

Seems that we should all have a basic understanding of knot tying and maybe the three strand splice. It gets kind of interesting to see the types of lines you wind up with once their spiced.

Would like to see some pics if you give it a try, good luck.
