How many of us know how to splice and whip our own lines?

Line splicing lends itself to many applications on vessels and the better you get, the more things you will find on your boat to splice a line around. When used with proper knot tying, splicing can aid you in many tasks around the boat and it is also a great way to kill time.

If you get the hang of it, you might want to venture into ornamental steering wraps, bell lanyards and custom fender lines. Splicing is not too hard to learn and you can really get into it. Give it a shot, we got the whole season ahead of us.

I recommend starting with 3 strand nylon or poly and finish with a neat whipped end.

Nylon or poly? A bic lighter and you don't need to mess with whipping the ends. Melt em.

Yea you can burn em, and I?ve done it plenty of times but a whipped end takes it up a notch.

There's a choice missing from the poll; what about those of us who already know how to splice, whip and fuse?

I did some eye splices to make dock lines several years ago and they worked great. Our Glastron was red/white and I had some red/white multiple braided line. The technique was different than 3 strand line. They worked great! I've lost them over the years (weird how that happens) and I need to make some for the Tidewater.

I learned splicing and whipping years ago. Always nice to have the knowledge.

I splice an eye onto one end of all my lines, but just burn the other end. The whipping never seams to last. (Maybe I was doing it wrong.

2ndtry, don't think the whip was done wrong but practice and they will last longer. I have done whips that have lasted as long as the lines themselves.

On stranded lines, I splice the bitter end back into itself, usually about four tucks. Looks WAY more skilled than whipping--more fun too.

Frank, if were talking about the same splice, we use to do them on the workboats, we call that knot the Donkey D!@K... Made the lines last longer when your guys beat the crap out of them. The official name I believe is the back splice

1st post on the site.
Just got back into boating and wanted to make my lines neat and clean, nver been a fan of knots, so went to this site, very helpfull

Yep, I do all my own splicing. I'm sure it doesn't look like much to most people, but there is a good bit going on with this lizard. Two tapered, dogged eye splices, with one around a round thimble, takes practice to do correctly.

I had the good fortune of being taught marlinspike seamanship as a kid by two excellent teachers. One was a true Sandy Hook Pilot, and the other was a retired Polish merchant marine seaman (who first shipped out at the age of 14 on a Russian wheat clipper, and could speak 14 languages fluently - Mike Gadzinski was one amazing guy with some incredible stories.)

I always heard if you can't tie a good knot then tie lots of 'em. Don't know much about it, but where can I learn?...too old to join the navy!

LOL, my dad was a Merchant Marine, for some twisted reason (pun really is intended) he had all of us kids splicing line before grade school, I am dead serious. I have no idea why he would have us do that, perhaps to keep us occupied and out of trouble, found it handy to know over the years, but as an adult left me scratching my head as to why I need to know this....

Maybe he new shipping/boating is in the blood and I wouldn't be able to stay off the water forever :p
