Tablet memory. When I go to 'storage', in settings, it shows three types of memory, This is for a Lenovo A1000 using the jelly bean OS. They are 'internal', SD and USB memory. I know what the first two are but not the last. What is USB memory? It shows that I have 3.16 gb of it. Also when I look at apps, in settings, with some of them it gives me the option to move the app to USB memory? Initially I thought it was giving me the option to move the app to the external memory (SD card) but not so.

What's it all about?

Sounds like it's referring to some kind of storage connected via USB. Perhaps a memory stick or external hard drive.

I can't think of anything else it could be. Mine offers the option of using either USB or internal memory for the default for writing, but since I don't have anything hooked up to the USB port, it doesn't show any USB memory available.

Lenovo partitions the internal storage so that required apps and data are separated from storage available to the user. It labels the user accessible portion USB storage and treats it as SD or USB memory. So you've currently got 3.19GB available to store stuff internally.

From Digital Trends review:

Thanks for the explanation jbcurt. To call it USB storage is a little misleading. They could have called it something more descriptive. I know this tablet was a cheapy and it sat unused (it was a gift) for two years until I got into E-books and public library activity. It was a good choice, cost wise, to break into the tablet genre.

I take it then that one cannot download apps to the SD card? I just bought a 64 GB card that has tons of room on it.

You have the option on that tablet to move apps to the SD storage, I used to do it on mine and you have the same one that I did, I finally gave mine to a friend for Christmas last year because my wife bought me a Kindle Fire, about all I do is read books on it, so didn't need the tablet any longer.

From that review, I dont think 100% of the app can be on the SD card, perhaps the startup or 'boot' of an app has to stay in the internal memory.

From my android phone experience, I never had any storage trouble w 8gb internal (w maybe 2 or 3GB avail to me) and an 8GB SD card. But I didnt treat my phone like a computer, and definitely didnt have any games on it.

Some apps didnt allow for them to be moved to the SD card, dont know why, others were easily moved to the SD card.

My Lenovo Yoga doesn't have this memory scheme. But if the "USB" part of the internal memory is set at 2.5GB as per the article, how can he have 3.19 GB available??

Clicking on various apps, I have not seen that option yet, only to move them to the USB storage.

I dont know what version of android was on the reviewed A1000, but if an older version pre JellyBean, I dont doubt theres been some changes to how the OS and storage is handled.

Open the settings and look for application management or similar. That should pull up a list of apps. There may be a few different lists, I typically just use the ALL Apps list. Scroll down that list and click to open any particular app's settings. Thats where there should be an option to move apps to an SD card.

Will your 2yr old Lenovo accept 64GB? I dont know for sure when tablets jumped to above 32GB max. It probably does, but I have no idea.
