spits, sputters, dies

83 evinrude 25 hp. will start and run, but spits sputters, backfires then dies. any suggestions to correct the problem

Greg,<br /><br />1. How is your fuel? Fresh?<br />2. Does the primer bulb pump up hard and stay that way?<br />3. Does choking it halfway or so make a difference?

fuel is fresh, primer bulb stays hard. runs great when choked. spits and dies when not choked.

Sure sounds like its time for a carb clean. You can try removing the drain plug at bottom front of float bowl. Sometimes drain the carb and spraying "Carb Kleen" into the hole and forcing it in with compressed air will get you by......but I'd recommend a carb disassemble and clean.....
