Re: Spitfire to points type distibutor ignition conversion

Personally, if it has the name Mallory on it, I wouldn't allow it on my boat. Their stuff is just junk.

I agree. The brand new Mallory starter that I installed for the initial start after the engine rebuild failed at the first turn of the key. My mechanic buddy had me pull it and he disassembled the solenoid to put back together properly and it worked fine afterward. Obviously not factory tested. He said this thing is a POS. I still need to get another one to keep on-board or replace and keep POS as a spare.

Thanks to Don S. this was easy, but ran out of steam to hook up the muffs and start it up today. The only thing that is confusing is the MM shift interrupter instructions.

OMC SHIFT INTERRUPT SWITCH HOOKUP
1.Locate the shift interrupt switch on top of the engine.
2. Cut the light blue wire on both sides of the switch.
3. Connect one side of the light blue wire to the single black wire, which was supplied with the ignition wiring kit.
4. Plug the single black wire in the distributor.
5. The shift interrupt hookup is complete.

I don't have any light blue wires on the switch. B/W only.

I make the biggest mess when I work on things.... http://s246.photobucket.com/albums/gg114/poofdirt/EST DISTRIBUTOR INSTALL/

Ok, here is the wiring diagram as your engine should be View attachment 122889

Here is the drawing with the items marked that you have to deal with. View attachment 122890

Here is what you need to do with each of the marked items.

A- Gray wire. This is for the tachometer and can be cut close to the connector on the module. It will be hooked up to the EST coil.
B- Tan/black wire. Used for the alarm buzzer on the helm. Cut it off to, tape the end and fold it back to the harness neatly out of the way, it will not be used, your alarm will still work.
C-White wire. Used for shift interrupt, cut off at connector, it will hook to the the EST distributor.
D-Purple/Black. Disconnet from the circuit breaker and discard with module. No longer needed.
E-12-1/2 amp breaker will no longer be used. The purple wire from the EST coil will hook to the 2 purple wires on the breaker.
F-Shift interrupt connector. The switch will be hooked different for the EST distributor. The W wire will go to the distributor (see diagram with EST distributor, and the B wire will become purple to the distributor itself.
G- Tan/Black (oops, already have that wire covered, see B above).
H- Black wire to module, Cut off and tape back. Not used anymore.
J- Green/black wire to knock module. Disconnect from knock sensor and discard. Sensor will not be needed any longer

Here is how the new EST distributor and coil are wired in. Will get into it a bit more when you have the new one in your hand and can see what the connectors are.

It appears that I didn't complete step F. Before I complete this, my understanding is that in the before wiring diagram the black wire from the interrupt switch went to ground. I the completed install, it should be to the switched 12V Purple wire at the alternator. Am I correct and what gauge wire would be sufficient?

Thanks

They are not photobucket pictures. They are uploaded to this site, and they are not private. BUT, You do have to be logged in to view them.
