I just purchased a new (to me) boat. It is a 1983 Mercedes walk through. The speedometer does not work. Does a boat speedometer work off of the motor or off of something else. The Motor is a Mercury Marine Serial # 6365879

Something else. Either a pitot speedo pickup on the stern or built into the lower unit and some speedos use GPS for speed.

Posting a serial number usually doesn't help much. It's kind of like posting your VIN number as public information. However there is digits in a vin that can be useful. Also vin numbers are usually registered to you while serial numbers you have to keep track of yourself.

What in the world are you talking about? This has nothing to do with speedos.
