Speedometer connection and installation

Hi All

I have searched the net over and over and can not find an answer. Here is my question. I have installed a brand new OEM Bravo Magnum transom assembly. There is a speedometer connection that comes through the transom. The transom assembly came from the factory with a yellow cap on the speedometer connector on the inside of the transom plate. My question is... Is this yellow cap going to prevent any leaking into the bildge through the speedometer connector? I have seen schematics, where the place where the speedometer sender hose is connected is removed and replaced with a plug. Unfortunately I have reinstalled the engine and can't get to the speedometer connector. If it will leak past the yellow cap is there a way of sealing it from the outside of the boat. Any help appreciated.

I would not expect the factory cap (a la dust cap) to hold. You can block the tube that normally would connect to the speedometer 'pitot' fitting on the transom plate to prevent water from coming in, although it is not recommended.

It would be better to get a tube connected to the inside of the transom assembly and bring it to a level much higher than the water line and terminate/seal it there, rather than anywhere else.

Disconnect the speedometer hose from the drive. Remove the fitting from the hose and plug it and tie it back out of the way with some wire ties.

Thanks Guys for the help. Put my mind at ease as it is the first time I have installed a transom assembly. Next time I will make sure I put the plug in the speedometer fitting when i take the transom assembly out of the box.
