I've been doing some searches but can't find anyplace to look up speedi sleeve part numbers that will fit my water pump shaft on my 3.7 Mercruiser. Can someone point me to a place to get them?

thanks!

Well I entered "speedi sleeve part numbers" in google and the second listing was www.skf.com/files/877995.pdf which had part numbers and dimensions. Does it answer the question?

IMHO you may not need them. Inspect the end of the cam, if it is smooth and not pitted then you probably don't need them. If however there are significant grooves where the seals contact the cam then sleeves would be a good idea. For one thing I think seal technology has advanced since the 80's and newer seals are better. I replaced my seals without speedi sleeves about 10 years ago and they are holding fine (so far LOL). I would go wit OEM seals rather than aftermarket. Just my opinion.

thank you again Terry. You guys are always so great with input and answers! I'm a member of a few motorcycle forums that have really good information, but they don't rival the level of information available from you guys on this site!

As for the sleeves, right now I'm investigating all the options. Since I have the motor apart, I just want to make sure I only have to do this one time and have it "right" for a LONG time to come! :)

If you decide to get the speedi sleeves, (I added them to mine), you can check with your local auto parts stores. They most likely won't have what you need in stock, but should be able to get them for you, as mine did.

double checked the end again tonight and even dry fit the timing cover to double check it. The cam end is definitely shot. Its rusted and grooved and for sure needs a sleeve. Can anyone validate the part number 99087 I found?

Yes I can help.
I did the speedi sleeve thing 2 seasons ago.
Here is a pic of the box. Numbers match yours.
These were the widest ones and worked well.
I would only caution that you have your seals pressed into the cover by the marina or boat shop.
Also be very gentle installing the cover over the seals.

Thanks Terry. I didn't realize it came with the cover part to install it. :)

Terry you beat me to it - Good links! :)
Dave just watch out when you "snip and rip" the rings.
If I remember right (I sometimes don't) the one closest to the timing gear is difficult because of clearance.
You may want to snip it before sliding it home, but leave (the install ring) on until you get it where you want on the camshaft.

Locktite 8831 under the sleeves, right? is there some alternative to this?

The rings came off pretty easy after snipping? I have visions of an edge sticking up or ripping something.

I found a reference that 271 could be used instead of 8831. Does that sound ok?

What you want is red loctite. I used the Napa equivalent which was less expensive.
It's real important you get the alignment correct. As far as cutting the rings it was a little touch and go. Just be careful.
You might consider flipping the inboard one around so that cutting is easier. That way the flared edge to be cut is further away from your cam gear. This didn't occur to me when I did mine; I think if I'd done it that way, I would have had less trouble with it.
In the end you may need to dress the ripped edge. I did and all was fine. So nice not to see coolant coming from the weep hole anymore.

Re: Speedi Sleeve for 3.7 Water Pump Shaft

Thanks for your help. I've got a small file that should do the trick with any burrs. Don't have all the parts in yet to get it done this weekend. I was really hoping to have it in the water by Sunday, but what's another week. :)

Yeah I hear that. I've read that the sleeves will outlast the engine.
Not to say you may never need to do the seals again; but at least you know the quality of the sealing surface has been improved.
Do you still have the factory crankshaft driven generator and water cooled voltage regulator on your motor?

No, swapped to an alternator and got rid of the points. the regulator is still there and passing water through, but not used.

Re: Speedi Sleeve for 3.7 Water Pump Shaft

Question for the group, just to be sure I'm doing this correctly during the install....the locktite goes on both the seals as well as on the sleeves? during dis-assembly, I did not find any locktite on the seals, so wanted to be sure if that is necessary or not.

thx!
