speed shift problems

hi all,
i have a 2005 bayliner 185 BR, (inboard) and i'm having a problem with the speed shift handle, it is very hard to put on Neutral or reverse, which makes it very hard to park the boat. i heard that i should change the shift cable? if yes, is there any tutorial on how to change or fix this issue?

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... Which motor,..?? Which drive,..??

Check that the wires are still hooked up at the shift switch, by the motor, where the forward cable, meets the lower shift cable...

Just an FYI, you have an I/O or sterndrive, not an Inboard.

No, the shift cable is not your problem. If the cable was the problem, the engine would die or run rough. You would also have problems going into gear, but you only mentioned coming out of gear.
As Bond-o mentioned, the shift interrupt switch is most likely your problem, and you need to check to see if it's being activated or it's defective or the wires are unhooked.

Merc stopped using the 120's back in the 80's, you say you have a 2005. Post the engines serial number so we can figure out what you have.

The thing is that i bought the bayliner with a broken engine and replaced the engine with a used one. The engine says it's 120 hp but i never knew it would be that old. I will get the s/n soonest, probably this weekend and will post it over here. Thanks for the great help

Post some pictures of your engine. Serial number won't help at this point. We need to know what things look like.
A picture of the left side, and right side of the engine, plus one looking straight down (or close to it) so we can see what you have that is old and what is new.

Ayuh,... The shift switch is clearly visible on the top of the valve cover...

So could the problem be solves if i grease the wires on the switch? Also when i move the handle when the boat is off it seems to be ok, the problem happens when the boat is running. Please help as i also need to grease/ change the steering cable

you first need to check if the switch works, as stated, it is located on top of the valve cover where the shift cables are mounted - it has the roller and arm

with the engine running, depress the arm - if the enigne dies the switch works, if the enigne stays running the switch is faulty

you either press it with your finger or move the actuator with the v-spring on it - either way will depress the arm and engage the switch

its really quite simple

Ayuh,.... It's been pointed out, repeatedly,...

The Switch is at the end of the arm in yer picture...

I see what your problem is with it being hard to come out of gear, the wiring is setup for a points ignition, and you have the Delco EST. You need to rewire the shift interrupt switch like the Delco EST models.
The engine serial number indicates a 1986 120hp motor.

Compare the two wiring diagrams below and you will see how you have to rewire the ignition and shift interrupt for yours to work.
