Re: Speed...how much faster Baja or Chaparral Cuddy???

Come on now....Baja had problems before Reggie ever came into the picture; that's why Brunswick basically gave it to him. Perhaps now that he's out of the picture they can figure out how to make a boat with a liner.

They didn't give it to him it was a Mercury deal to get product out and had nothing to do with problems at Baja.

As for liner boats that's what Brunswick built, which was eliminated by Fountain in favor for stringers. There is nothing wrong with most liner built Baja's.

I'm really not sure what problems you think they had. They offered a light proven rough water hull for a reasonable price. Sure they didn't built Nortechs but that wasn't the market they were after.

As for Fountain well they have always been full of problems with their business, starting with Reggie's no stop B.S., he ran the company in the ground even with all the money the bank gave him and the state.

I'm surprised how many responses you got. I feel like there are too many people who will say, who cares how fast it'll go, you'll burn too much gas and boating is about slowing your roll. I agree completely, but I like going fast! It's in my blood. Just because you want to open it up and do 60 MPH, doesn't mean you are going to be a drunk idiot.

I loved my 19 ft Larson bowrider with the 4.3 Volvo. I could cruise easily at 35 with ease. Top end was right at 50 per GPS. The cool thing was that this was whether it was just me, or 4 people and coolers and stuff. It only made a difference of a few MPH loaded, not much.

Anyway, just went off for no reason really.

No money changed hands in the sale of Baja to Fountain. There was a 20 year note; to be retired so long as Fountain maintained their commitment to only use Mercury power. At least that's the way I understood it. No money changing hands = gave it away in my estimation.

As for the Baja problems, quite a few 23 Outlaws had to have their decks pulled off and the boats fixed due to problems with the liner/grid construction. ALL of the 405's had problems, a few early model 30 Outlaws and a few 26 Outlaws also had issues (I know of 2 26'ers....tracked that one closely as I own one). These recalls spelled the end of Baja when it was under the Brunswick umbrella....at least that is the way it appeared to many of us Baja owners.

You're right; it's a decent boat for the price but when they had so many of them coming apart it became too much of a liability for Brunswick and they dumped it IMO. It's a real shame too because IF they had been constructed properly they could have been good boats. There's nothing wrong with grid/liner construction....lots of boats use it....Baja just had some problems executing the design on more than a few boats. We've enjoyed both of our Bajas; again it's a decent boat for the money, but the rigging and detail work does leave something to be desired. Of course it isn't a high end custom boat but I still would expect a little better. It isn't the worst out there, but it's far from the best....even comparing to other mass produced boat brands.

As for Reggie's business acumen....or lack thereof, you'll get no arguments from me there.

Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast.....

That speed seems about right for the H2X. One of my buddies has an H2X with a 375 horse 496. It runs about 65. The 310 horse 7.4mpi should put you at 60 or maybe a tick faster. My Hammer is 21.6' with the same power and its flirting with 70. :)

What's a Chaparral?....lol

A Chaparral is a boat likes yours but Better....LOL

Well, if it helps my 22 foot Larson has a 5.7 (rated at 250hp) and a Bravo 3, she'll do a GPS'd 53 at 4600rpm full of people, gas and coolers, 4 hrs of mixed boating uses about 15 gls. Last boat, 17ft 4Winns with a 5.7 Alpha 1, racing prop and thru hulls (rated at 260) would do 63 with the trim tabs about flush, full fuel, 2 persons but that 4 barrel SUCKED gas like it was water in a strainer. The real question is how quick it is. The 4Winns sat up said hello and was gone, it ran down bass boats all day long. The Larson, she gets up real fast thanks to the B3 but then after about 45 she takes a while to get to 53. Theres a lot of things that will play into "speeds" holeshot vs top end and hull shape, speed vs stability. Pick the one that looks and feels the best (Id go with the Baja cause I've always wanted one!)

Please see BoatTest.com for tests on a number of Baja boats. Chapparal is not covered, however. You need to filter for high performance boats and 21'-25' to pull them up.

It appears Baja is faster than a Chapparal, however not as fast a boat as some of the above replies have said. To get these boats much more than 60 mph takes brute horsepower, cubic inches, and big money. None of these boats are fly weight race boats--but they're thick hulled, fully equipped luxo cruisers.

You cannot go wrong with either Baha, Chapparal or Sea Ray. They're all nice, but I will always lean toward Sea Ray for quality, performance and resale.

Thread was started on Jan 25th, probably decided by now........... this was my SR 225 Weekender, 5.0 Crusier. Any tuber that said "You can't throw me off" was chunked ...........It would do 46 GPS with 6 adults, very good ride in pretty heavy water. I miss it, the wife misses it more, but I'm a dirt-mover............dirt has not moved much for a while.

26p Bravo III, WOT is 4600 RPM at 54 MPH GPS with plenty of pull to jerk a Wakeboarder up. All in all I wouldn't change it....until I drop in my 383.

I bought a 2007 larson senza 226 last year. It has a volvo penta 5.7 w/sx drive and 19p prop. I can barely get over 50. Do you think the previous owner was running the wrong prop.
