Looking at two different hulls same engine;

1) Baja H2X 24.5' with Mercruiser 7.4 and single SS prop; (supposed to go 60 - 62 MPH & cruise at 45 MPH)

2) Chaparral 2335 cuddy with Mercruiser 7.4 SS Duo-Prop; (How fast?)

Also, what can one consider in fuel consumption with a 7.4 Liter for a 4-5 hour day of boating...some cruise, some towing wakeboard, a little speed?

Thanks!

The Chap is probably good for low 50s.

My 7.4 MPI burns 24 to 26 GHP at WOT (depending on air density), which yields 2 MPG and about 12 GPH at cruise, where I get 2.5 MPG or so. I usually use 25 to 35 gallons in a full day of of boating, but have burned as much as 50 gallons.

1. Probably won't go that fast.
2. Mid 50s

That Chap 2335 is a "big" 23'er, it's like 23'8". I helped a dealer deliver one new on 1997, and I liked it. Made my 2135 seem tiny!

That speed seems about right for the H2X. One of my buddies has an H2X with a 375 horse 496. It runs about 65. The 310 horse 7.4mpi should put you at 60 or maybe a tick faster. My Hammer is 21.6' with the same power and its flirting with 70. :)

What's a Chaparral?....lol

Cannot locate accurate speeds of most Cuddy Express cruisers or Performance boats???

Cannot locate accurate speeds of most Cuddy Express cruisers or Performance boats???

I have searched the internet Hi/Low to find some accurate boat speeds or tests on a variety of brands and cannot seem to locate any.

I realize conditions; weather / weight have an affect, but there should be something out there???

I am interested in a 21-25' Cuddy and am looking at Chaparral, Regal, and Sea Ray

Would like to know performance of each with a 5.0, 5.7, and 7.4

Likewise, I am interested in the performance of a Baja H2X with a 7.4 Mercruiser...

Anyone have any good info?

Thanks!

Are these new boats? If they are, contact the manufacturers. If used, you won't find anything unless a boating magazine tested that particular boat.

Four Winns has the only online archives I know of, that provide speed and fuel consumption specs for all of their boats with all available motor and outdrive combinations

The "typical" cuddy cabin is not sold based on performance but on style and comfort.

If you use Google you will find various boat tests however, you will not find the manufacturer's or tester's placing all too much emphasis on the speed.

If Google does not work, the manufacturer's web sites don't work......get a pocket GPS and do the physical shopping. I do know that the Baha H2X will travel at about 70+ MPH.

Are these new boats? ...

No Chaparral hasn't made a 2335 in a few years now. They started making them in about 1995 or 1996 for sure. Not sure when they quit making them, though.

Like Bob_VT said, "a typical cuddy cabin is not sold based on performance"... And you're a little bit out of my league; but my 20'3" does 46mph on GPS with 3 adults, 2 children, 50+ gallons of fuel, and loaded with cargo in choppy water. The rest of my boats info is in my signature. She's no speedboat; but she's a lot of fun.

Let us know what you end up with, and have a great time!!!

Just teasing, Great boats... There are a lot of them on Lake Lanier (where I boat). I wonder how long Chaparral will be able to hang on. Their showing at the Atlanta Boat show was pretty sparse. Chap's new magazine adds point out they have been under the same managment for 45 years..... (those guys must be old).

2001 Chap 265 ssi 6.2 MPI B3 (250 hrs)
waxed bottom no paint
1/2 fuel
no fresh water in tank
no black water in tank
very light gear
light chop
4 people about 600 lbs
the best I have seen is 53 on GPS
just had the props balanced and tuned up (what ever they do to them)
not expecting to see any more speed

Re: Speed...how much faster Baja or Chaparral Cuddy???

Not to take this thread off topic but I did notice that the new Chap's are down a bit in quality of materials used. I was at the Seattle Boat Show this past weekend and I looked at both the Chaps and the Cobalts and they both seemed to have dropped some of the higher end features. I also noticed that Cobalt is now selling out to a certain degree with a low end 20' bow rider that looks like a Bayliner with cobalt badges on it. Not typical Cobalt quality at all. I think all the manufacturers are scaling back quality to get pricing down, and sell more boats. I left the show being very happy with the boat I have.

Yep... we've got a bunch of Baja's around here too. Chappy's are awesome boats too. My Dad bought a brand new 187XL back in 1988 (I think, could have been a 1990). The fit and finish on that older Chappy is still better than my 2000 Baja. It wasn't nearly as fast tho! :D

Come on now....Baja had problems before Reggie ever came into the picture; that's why Brunswick basically gave it to him. Perhaps now that he's out of the picture they can figure out how to make a boat with a liner. :)

An H2X with a 330hp 7.4 is going to be a low 60mph boat. With a 425hp 496 it'll run right at 70.

Nice boat...I really like them.

In that size range I'd also look at Crownline. In the late 80's/early 90's they made a very nice trailerable 26' with a single big block and a cuddy. Had a flatter deck and was more "sporty" than most Crownies....more like Sea Ray's Pachanga. I can't remember the model but always liked it as a sporty cuddy.

I had a 18' Four Winns Open Bow w/ 5.0 that stayed a hair under 50mph at WOT... My current 21' Cuddy w/ 5.7 hits 50mph at WOT then a tad bit over after adjusting the Trim Tabs a bit... WOT sucks through gas pretty fast on either though, 40-45mph seems to be more of a happy sweet spot for cruising.

My little brother has a late model Ranger Reatta 18'-6" that tags 60mph at WOT, he leaves me behind everytime. - lol :D
