Speakers on Swim Platform?

I am getting ready to fix the holes the previous owner put through the back of the swim platform for the redneck exhaust. I have been kicking around the idea of mounting speakers in this area instead of patching the holes. I am not one for having a radio blasting when anchored and figured if the speakers were out back I would be ble to have the volume low and still be able to enjoy music when swimming or just lounging around.

My question is does anybody see this being a bad idea keeping in mnd I will be using marine speakers?????

Here is a pic of the NICE exhaust that I will be removing andd placing speakers in its place.

That exhaust is fantastic! Not!!! If you sealed the speakers inside the transom... ie glassed/5200'd a waterproof box behind each speaker it might work, but the longevity of the speakers would be severely diminished if you slow down too quickly - even full on marine speaker cones break when hit by a wall of solid water! Why not use a couple of bracket mounted box type speakers in the stern area and when you want to have a swim, undo the brackets and sit them on top of the lounge back rests. Just a thought.

If you want them there I don't see what it would hurt. The speakers will probably get wet alot and be exposed to the sun, but they should last a while as long as they don't get totally swamped. I wouldn't put in really expensive speakers though. That way it won't be a big deal when one needs to be replaced. I've also seen some brand new boats that have a hard wired remote control mounted by the swim platform where it can be reached easily from outside the boat. I think that would be a good idea too if I was mounting speakers back there. Are you routing the exhaust back through the hub?

I am looking at using a PYLE stuff and the speakers are like 30 bucks. I was looking at the remote option however the radio I am looking at buying has a wireless remote. YES! I am putting the exhaust back through the outdrive so it is QUIET! I like the sound of thru hull (real thru hull, not this mess) however I want this to be a comfortable boat that people can carry on a conversation in.

Yea you are thinking the same as me. I was also concerned of the backwash when letting off fast. I was hoping if I bought speakers with tight mess covers it would help break up the water slaming into the speakers.

Maybe it is worth a try, worse case senario is I will have to remove the speakers and fix the holes later.

The Aussie hit the nail on the head. Speakers are no more than an open metal frame with a thin membrane in them. If pooped from astern the speaker cone will not be able to withstand that kind of pressure, will rupture, and become a point of ingress for water to enter the hull.

In calm conditions no big deal. In rough conditions a really really bad idea.
