Can I splice the spark plug wires? It looks like the spark plug wires are permanently attached to the coils and I dont want to buy new coils. The wires are bad and arcing all over the place when I crank it over. I picked up some 7mm spark plug wires with boots that I can use, but what do I do for a splice? Im assuming cutting, stipping, twisting together and taping with black electrical tape is not the answer here...

Try "the scott guy at ask the scott guy on the net.He will robably know your options.I never heard of splicing plug wires.Maybe the plug wires need to be twisted like unscrewing them.

Yeah, some of those old plug wires were permanently molded into the coils. Trying to remember, is that a Fairbanks-Morse magneto? I suppose if you are careful to pick a good spot to do it, you could splice and solder and use a piece of heat shrink tubing to cover the splice.

Definitely check with the Scott Guy. A tidy splice would work...clean, soldered, etc., as already mentioned, but you'd always have some old wire left on there and sooner or later you'll need to replace the entire wire. Use solid core wire, not the stuff you get at auto stores for cars.

The magneto on there is a Wico. I cant seem to find any replacement coils anywhere, but I dont think the coils are bad in the first place so I hate to replace them. I have an email into the Scott Guy, he's answered a couple questions already for me he's really good. Oh yeah, and I wish i would have read this post before I bought the spark plug wires at the auto store and cut them...shame on me.

Re: Spark Plug Wires

Solid core wire is best for the voltage a magneto carries.
