i have a 1976 70 evinrude and when i went to move the plug wire out of the way so i could change the plug , the **** wire fell out of the coil. Do the plug wires just shove into these coils or are they supposed to be permantely attached? Thanks for the replys.

On that coil, it is suposed to be epoxyed-in.
On older ouboards (up till the early 70s), they were held in place with screw pins, solder, and rubber grommets.
It sounds like you need a new coil. The one you have could be re-connected,an HV epoxy poured-over it, and placed in a plastic bag to go in the emergency repair kit (it will get you home, but I wouldn't rely on it being a permanant fix).
My father in-law had an engine like yours, and the coils failed often.Given the price (I forget, but do remember we couldn't afford gas after buying new ones), I think you better brace yourself for sticker shock.
At any rate, good luck with the repair.

I have a 1975 johnson 70hp stinger where i just replaced te coils. They were 31.00 a piece from local dealer and the plug wires screw in. Not the best design they ever came up with. I also used automobile connecters on the other end of wires as they seem to keep corrision out and give me better contact.
