I'm curious on the heat range on spark plugs. How does one know if the plugs they are using are appropriate or should be changed

Plug heat range is one of a dozen parameters for engine design. The proper range of plug was determined by the engine designer when the engine was first built. It's not a good idea to change it very much from that value unless one is modifying an engine significantly. The plug must heat up to the correct temp to burn the mixture, and not leave deposits, but still remain cool enough not to glow which can cause pre-ignition or detonation.

Best bet is to start with the mfg heat range, insure your mixture is set properly, and run the engine at modest speeds for 2 hours. Remove the plugs and 'read' them. For a carb engine, the plug should be tan or light chocolate color. For a FI engine it will be light tan or cream color. Anything other than this is going to be too cold(dark brown) or too hot(off white). Carb setting, timing, compression ratio, 2 or 4 stroke all play into this.

Not super focused but based on color looks good on the tang/electrode. Nice and tan, even with unburnt deposits nearer the threads is okay

Keep in mind, carbureted + ford = loves fuel.

The hotter the range the cleaner it will burn up fuel and sooner burn up!

That heat range mark on strap looks ok maybe a tad to hot side - wouldnt go any hotter based on what you are showing here. Actually looks really good.
I cant recall where u landed for carb - did you replace it or rebuild the one you had?

I replaced it. I've found a few other issues effecting things. Dirty gas tank....removed and cleaned....plugged gas tank vent...replaced....

Last one looks a bit lean. Maybe go one step richer

Plugs look fine to me, as usual. If anything a bit rich but nothing to fret over

Would guess based on mid range stumble as the complaint the power valve spring is too tight or there's debris in the lower port

Not a bad time to check/re adjust valve springs given the post break in near 100 hrs mark

I'm guessing at this stage of the engine and reading the plugs you would be able to tell if there's internal issues like burnt valves and such am I correct

I've got carb off again...any particular area I should clean and blow air through. There was a few small specs in float bowl but that's it.

I would go just one number richer on the jets.

Half the plugs are perfect, the other half are just a tad too white
