Yo fellow boaters. Im new to diagnostics and I am trying to find the simplest way a guy at home can check the spark on my 1981 235 evinrude. any suggestions would be great. Thanks.... Trev
lick you fingers use one hand to hold the high tension lead and the other to hold the head. get your Friend to crank her over and they can tell by your reaction how good the spark is
nahhh
there are some decent testers that are inexpensive. someplace on this forum is a homne made one with pics and instructions. did 6 cyls at once and looked pretty good.
Keep in mind the spark should jump a 3/8 inch gap in a healthy system.I think rodbolt's method means you are also standing on your toetips, with tongue extended about an inch.

DHP
The inexpensive spark checkers you can get at auto parts stores are worth the $$. Just remember to check one wire/plug at a time and don't undo the other wires while doing this. They need to be left connected to their plugs, otherwise damage can result and that can get expensive.
I just get a pair of pliers and hold the spark plug onto the earth and watch for the spark. Not sure this is ok on the newer engines with electronic stuff.
Break the outer electrode off a good spark plug so the spark has to jump a gap you can see easily to the centre electrode. Solder or weld or even duct tape the plug to a clamp. Fit the plug lead to the plug. Clamp it to the engine or a ground. Turn the engine.

The advantages of this set up are that you have both hands free which is great if you need to pull a starter to turn it and you can use a key start from the normal steering position and still see the spark.

It's safe on breaker point ignitions which is what I work on but I'd ask someone else here whether it can damage an electronic ignition like yours before using it on one of them. I suspect it's not a good idea for them.
