Hi 50

Partly Cloudy

The current climate you live in currently cool to cold. If you have no thermostat to maintain a powerhead running temp between 120 to 160, then the cold waters that you are running your motor in will accelerate the carbon/coking build up process in your powerhead, on top of your cylinders and around the rings. Your plugs will foul up in no time causing the problems that you are having now.

The thermostat stays closed until the temperature of the powerhead starts reaching about 130 to140F, then the thermostats starts to open to allow some water in to circulate around the water jackets to cool off the power head to maintain a good operation, again between 120 to 160F. So, the thermostat will open and close to help maintain operation temperature. It is within the 120 to 160F range that the optimal combustion of the fuel oil mix takes place.

If you have no thermostat in or it is faulty then water will circulate around the water jackets all the time and the powerhead will stay much colder. Colder powerhead temperatures will allow the unburned fuel oil mix to build up and slug up all over instead of being burned off or exiting the exhaust/water mix going out near the foot of the motor.

So, follow the instructions of the Evinrude Engine Turner that you got and take off the spark plugs and sprays some in the spark plug holes to soak the heads of the pistons some and replace the spark plugs.
A fellow antique/vintage restorer, who works as a certified Evinrude/Johnson mechanic in a Florida dealership states the Evinrude Engine Turner is a very good product.

So, please do yourself a favor, put a new thermostat in the motor, decarb with the Engine Turner product. Replace the spark plugs with J6C gapped at .030

Now remember, that motor is going to smoke a whole bunch, when you get it out on the water to run it. Run it until it stops a good bit of the smoking. All that smoke is the carbon/coke burning away.

Change to fresh new pair of plugs after the decarbing and re-torque the spark plugs when done.

This is what you posted first!

I have a 1973 Johnson 25hp (25BR73A) that suddenly have begun consuming large amounts of spark plugs. When I install new spark plugs it runs just fine the first 3- 5 hours. Then I start to experience loss of power at full throttle. In the beginning it's almost not noticeable. The revs drop for a split second. These drops then come more and more often and lasts longer, but only at full throttle.

The thermostat is faulty. When I changed the head gasket I discovered that it is stuck in the open position. This would not have been a big issue earlier as I would run WOT all the way to the fishing ground, stop and fish, then run WOT back. The last 3 seasons I have been doing a lot more trolling... There might be a pattern emerging here... Will investigate further.

The whole time, your problem was your thermostat, because you stated it would run fine until the spark plugs foul up with carbon that built up!!

You replace your thermostat then your problems should go away too. Would not hurt to do a decarbing once a year. Good cheap insurance.

Good luck and hope you get back to fishing soon :)!! Please don't think I was shouting at you with the bold words or large font size, I was trying to get your attention and focus on the apparent problem. That is all:D

I do sincerely wish you good luck!

Edit: I edited the font size, nwcove was right...too big:D

Re: Evinrude/Johnson Engine Tuner

I have now decarbed the engine using Engine Tuner. The amount of smoke was unebelivable!

I am now experiencing something that I think is called a lean sneeze. Will try to make some adjustments once I take the boat out on the sea.

Can't wait to get the 25hp going again, even if my 7,5hp Mercury spare works great for trolling.

But, the main concern is replacing the thermostat. $20 Cheap part but very important!!

Here is a quote from Joe Reeves for set you slow speed/idle needle.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Thank you! Have already read this! Took the boat out on the sea last weekend. The ride was a bit bumpy with 2 feet waves, but I managed to hang on. The engine now runs a lot smoother, and there is hardly any smoke at all. So I think we can relabel this one as solved!

Re: Evinrude/Johnson Engine Tuner

Leave out the Biltema Oil, JUNK!
Drop down to Maritim Center AS and ask if they still have the old OMC product Carbon Guard.
Use Carbon Guard together wit the XD 30 oil, or if no Carbon Guard - buy the XD-50 oil!!
Install new thermostat, gap your plug to 0,8 mm, and even try a J8C if they have it. (Used that when running in winter conditions down at Nesbryggen, Tonsberg).
If doing a lot of trolling, go down to 1,5-2% oil, at least not above 2%.
(Skitt fiske!!)

The thermostat??
Yes, initially the faulty thermostat was the cause. This resulted in an engine that ran to cold and needed to be decarbed.
New thermostat and decarbing with Evinrude/Johnson Engine Tuner did the trick.

@ Haffiman: Thank you for good advice. Will change the Biltema oil and try the things you recomended!
