Solenoids?

I replaced the starter solenoid on my port 1989 200 Mariner. Now with both batteries fully charged neither engine turns over. My first thought was bad solenoids which it probably is. Howver why did they burn out so fast especially on the port engine. Here's the wierd part... Without the key in the ignition, I turn on the battery to port engine and engine starts to turn over. Like it's possessed. Must be a short..

Any ideas?

Thanks folks

Re: Solenoids?

Kahuna you have either a dead short or one of your batteries is not connected correctly. Could also be a short in the ignition switch.

Re: Solenoids?

key off. disconnect the 2 small wires from the solenoid and retest battery switch. ohms test the 2 large terminals on the solenoid. infinity. ohms test the yellow(purple for outboard?) wire to ground disconnected. infinity. any continuity on these tests will lead you to your problem.
