Soda Pop Drinkers

At my house we consume large numbers of soda pop. Mostly it is consumed by relatives and friends. We are finding that this is a pretty good chunk of our budget that is just for drinking.

I've been planning to put a drink system into my house with two stations. One in the kitchen and the other in the rec room bar downstairs. I have most of the needed equipment to do this project. The main cost is the initial cost of the product itself. Once it is up and running it should be more cost effiecient than buying cans.

This unit would be built in and wouldn't be one of those things you would want to remove when the house is up for resale. So this is my question,,,,Would this be a plus or a minus on the resale of the house?

I haven't ever noticed anyone having a drink system in their house. It is a very expensive initial cost and is probably why you don't see them.

Good idea or bad?

i personally don't see it being an asset to the property. having spent many years in the real estate business. it could be a drawback as there is a trend to try to get away from all the sugar involved in sodas. there suppose to be 7 tablespoon or something like that in a 12oz regular coke. may be it's teaspoons, still a lot of sugar. how about a water fountain.

Naw Spinner, I already have a tap & keg setup. In the last year or so I have pretty much quit drinking beer. I like the idea of having the soda fountain for the mixed drinks though!:D

I knew it.:p
I just drink Diet Mt. Dew so I would not have to worry about the sugar content as TD says.:D

Oh there will be chilled filtered water available at the drink station as well :D

My family will get their sugar fix in other ways if they don't get it in their soda pop. I'm just tired of dealing with the cans and the bugs while saving the aluminum for scrap. A messy stinky job I want to elimanate.

Have you considered using 3 liter bottles, ice and cups? That cost would be a small fraction of cans.

The biggest issue would be keeping the lines sanitary during long winter periods of low use ;)

I know of people who are currently circumnavigating on their large catamaran with two kids. They've had great success with this setup to satisfy their tastes for soda pop.

Hope it's ok to post that kinda link here.

I have to agree with Tommy here. My dad use to have a bar and it was a big
chore to clean the lines. I guess the other thing would be would you use it up fast enough before it went bad. If I'm right a container of premix pop and co2 will make like 1000 glasses of pop and you will need a can of premix for every flavor of pop you would like to have on tap.

PS when we cleaned the lines it was always on a Sunday afternoon and you know the the beer in the lines had to go somewhere.

I used to work for Pepsi, installing those machines. There is plus and minus about using them.

For large volumes it's a must. If you use syrup and the machine mixes for you, it's a bigger deal than the premix.

Cleaning isn't as bad as you think. I promise you the resteraunts don't clean very often and you don't know the diff for a long time. The product keeps a long time because it's in a sealed container and keeps carbonated because co2 used to push it thru the lines.

If you were to get an older fridge that still works good, gut it out and put your stuff in the fridge, and mount the taps thru the door, you'll have a portable system you can take if you move.

It will not increase but DECREASE the value of the house it's installed in.

I brew and I have a five keg tap. I clean the lines once a month and it takes 5 minutes. I fill a corny keg with about two gallons of star-san mix and push it through the lines with co2. Then I rinse it all with 2 gallons of cold water and hook the brew back up.

As far as a permanent setup- no go. I put a temp controller on an old chest freezer and I run my setup through that. Works great and it was (relatively) inexpensive to put together.

The other cool thing is that you can make a ton of great sodas from scratch for the kids- grape aid, orange soda, rootbeer, etc. Forget that soda club thing... it's too expensive and it tastes like carbonated azz.

Re: Soda Pop Drinkers

Wife and I talked some more on this idea. It will save a substantial amount on using the drink system. I will build it into a cabinet that can be removed once the house is sold. Of course it will or can be an option if they want to have it.

I'm aware of the cleaning and sanitizing of the system. I service the drink systems in our stores so setting it up and maintaing it will not be a problem for me. The only product that will be a concern on spoiling would be the diet line. They tend to go bad after time. Most of the time there will only be two or 3 kinds on tap.

Thanks for the responses, it is always nice to have other comments and ideas.......SS

FWIW, a recent study showed that people who drank 3 or more sodas a day lost 10 lbs in one year after eliminating sugar soda from their diet.
