dumped the boat in at launch- didn’t get far kept starting up but wouldn’t stay on kept stalling out then noticed water in the boat in th back. I managed to get towed back to shore - someone didn’t put the plug in. Took boat in they said there’s water in the oil. The oil was checked right before th launch. Is the boat ruined now?? Any help is appreciated 😊

Welcome
Water in oil doesn't mean the motor is ruined, unless the motor was left running until it locked up. Change oil a few times and get it running for a while. As the motor warms up it will start burning off the water that remains

thanks! The engine didn’t lock up I stopped trying after realizing th sinking part.
Get the water out of the engine crankcase replace oil, take spark plugs out spin engine to expel any water from combustion chambers and get it running. Dont let the water sit in there. Then repeatedly change the oil until it runs clear.

Being a 1982 it's probably a 140 and has either a points distributor or Digital ignition (DDIS)

Guess not knowing much we would have trouble helping there unless you can get info as to what is happening.

Have them trouble shoot what causes it not to run. It's high school auto class 101

I found the manual- engine model 470 170 hp boat is called srv190 - to find any help in the past few years has been challenging. This is a new mechanic place so I’m trying not to be a pain in the butt. I can do basic things troubleshoot etc. This happened to my jet boat and it was fine, didn’t skip a beat.

The dizzy uses points
The motor uses a carb

Most mechanics under the age of 50 have never seen either

Start your own thread. However you have to pull your starter apart within minutes of it being pulled from the water

Got water in my oil this year. Changed it twice with cheap oil and sea foam added to the oil both times. The third change was the proper oil and clean.

So I’m back:( after replacing I’m not sure how many things last year carb starter I forgot what else but it was a lot they delivered the boat in October to me winterized and wrapped. I was super excited to unwrap her and goooo but nooo go. Bought a new battery still wouldn’t start / I was like oh maybe it has no gas (gauge has never worked) put 5 gallons in it. Nothing -one of the distributor lines was off hooked that up -it definitely wanted to start. Went back at it the next day and the engine compartment and boat smell like gas and there was some gas coming out from the drain plug.( not a lot) Took battery out - waiting and waiting on the shop to come get it. I did find a random clear tube w a nut on one end but no idea where or where that might go. I’m so sad 😭. I’m more mad at the shop, and since they did all this work on it last year and promised me my boat wasn’t ruined. Any ideas suggestions are great appreciated so welcome.

Is this ai?

If not, maybe worthy of a nomination for hall of fame post

I'd suggest buying a new, quality brand boat from a reputable dealership in your area. Ask family, friends, neighbors, other boaters and random strangers their opinion as to which local pleasure boat supporting business is the best

you mention taking on water but make no mention of the automatic bilge pump that should have alerted you?
