Untill I got my fish finder, I have runaround 4 times, all 4 at slow speeds on a VERY low tide in the backwaters, all 4 times in the DARK.

I ran out of gas once, had to paddle, bought another gas tank, that solved the problem from happening again.

Ive used my 16' sylvan to break ice several times, sounds like the boat is ripping apart but it doesnt do any damage, I still try and refrain from doing it. Another thing we do is bring a bag of rock salt with us for the ramp, usually we arnt the first to put the boat in the morning so the ramps are iced up, throw some salt down so everyone can have a safe trip up the ramp, I just wished every hunter took the time to do it instead of just a handful.

I fell off my boat yesterday, yes you heard right, I FELL OFF MY BOAT!
Very embarrassing I know but what made it even worse was the laughter that erupted from my neighbour who watched the whole thing.
You see I was washing the boat to get ready for the summer season and my foot slipped off the side when I thought I had a good toehold. I wasn't holding on as I usually do when on the water (1 hand for you, the other for the boat).
Landed with a crash on top of the bucket of cleaning stuff and smashed 2 bottles of upholstry cleaner. Once able to walk I had to wash up all over again!
Bloody dogs thought it was a hoot also cause they licked my face togeather till I could move. Another wash just for me after that!
My wife and son haven't stopped laughing yet, keep saying they'd love to have seen it!
Ross

I am a relatively new owner of a Mac 25 sailboat. My wife and I have had our share of stupid things happen to us this season because we didn't know any better.I am trying to prevent one more thing that we don't want to happen with this question.....I keep hearing people speak of forgetting the "plug". I sure hope I don't have one because I've never put one in or taken one out.......Can someone enlighten me?

thanks

Mike

"Plug"
Thing what stops water commin into the boat when it's in the water, and, thing that once removed lets water drain out of the boat once finished with and on the trailer.
You put it in before going into the water and remove it once out and dry.
Usually found very low down at the back (stern) of the boat. Sometimes there can be two of them if theres an internal structure stopping water from free draining into one side.
Occasionally threre will be "ventury" type drains that open automatically under a certain speed and allow water to drain away on the plane.
Seldom will there be nothing unless it's a small dinghy.
Ross

Re: So far this year... Please add yours!

Well it all started when I bought my "new" 1984 Baja SS 184 and Merc 150 in Detroit. about two hours from home. Right out on the main highway at 5:00 on firday afternoon the wheel bearing went out ( well duh there were no dust caps on them ) took car of that , really not that big of deal after we got away from teh semis running 75 MPH 5 ft from us. After going boating once with the boat and having no problems. I decieded that the radio needed replaced and that wiring sure looked terrible. I went through a lot of it cleaning it up making it a bit neater. Well we took a family boating with us the next weekend taking old boat and new boat. 2 minutes into the rige smoke pours from the dash. I jump to teh battery and pull the wires. Looking under the dash I thought I might have found the problem , so I hooked it all back up. Smoke again. Had wife tow me to the marina thought maybe they could take a quick look . no they done work on any thing that old ! My friend , not being very mechanical. Just joked that is it had a pull cord like a lawn mower I could get it to run !! Well Duh again !! I unhooked teh wires insulated them and fired it up with the rope ,,throwing a one finger salute to the Guy at the marina. Man starting a 150 with a rope !! it was soo easy !!

Got home and found that some one had used a green wire for a Hot wire. I was taught never to do this and had hooked it to ground ....

I always loved Mercs (My dad sold them) disliked Johnsons.. that old Johnson will run forever just because I had it in for it.. My wife laughed the hole time she was towing me.

After she saw me start the Merc with my bare hands ( so to speak ) she stopped laughing.

Posted for some help the other day. Needed to get a hydraulic lifter out of a 454 mercruiser. Manifold too close to the valve cover. Option remove exhaust manifold. Do not have the ability to do that. Got 1 reply said a flexible 1/4" extention would work. Do not want to remove exhaust manifold. Bought extension. With high hopes returned to marine to pull lifter. Flexible extension did not work. Return home. Few Jack Daniels got me to thinking; maybe I can remove the manifold. Go back to marina, high hopes, hydraulic lifter soon out. Sure enough not that hard. Down to the last bolt (of course). Seems like during the last overhaul, mechanic over zealous with this bold. Sheared it off laterally so only bout 1/8 of head remained. Can’t get socket on it. Go home have some Jack Daniels and call the mechanic. No we didn’t do that must have been someone else. Yea sure. Have some more Jack Daniels contemplating next step. It worked. New idea, get another mechanic to get the lifter out. Meet mechanic at the dock. Said his rates were $65 per hour and this could take some time. Go home to get some more Jack Daniel. Oh *(&^$#@, out of Jack Daniels on top of that, lifter still in boat. True story.

----------------------------------------------

There are old sailors and bold sailors,
but there are no old bold sailors.
