So I've got what I think is the original snap in carpet for my Chris Craft. It's in decent shap all in all just stained, grungy and most of the snaps are busted. Was thinking bout renting one of those carpet cleaner/extractor machines to clean it? Any suggestions on cleaning or is this the way to go?

Also, need to change out the snaps. Will go with stainless of course. Any recommendations on snap size? 3/8" or 1/4" for carpet and I don't have a snap tool. Really don't want to spend $100 on another tool. Any recommendations on a cheap one that works well?

Thanks as always for the input and advice!

Oh yes go to a local fabric shop and they do sell very cheap and easy to use snap tools and you can even buy new snaps there as well. But you could lay the carpeted parts out on a driveway and clean them with some good soap and water and then hose them off, hang them to dry. If that doesn't fix the stains, then take them to a cleaners for professional cleaning. A real good trick to removing stains from auto carpet is to use some GO JO or Orange Glo or Fast Orange, or most any type greasy automotive hand cleaner and rub it in with your hands on the actual stains and then hose them off. I've see that take out some very stubborn stains out of carpet... However, not knowing the material or type carpet you have, do a little test spot in an area not easily seen when installed to make sure the hand cleaner won't harm the dye. It is that good... JMHO!

Wish I had snap in carpet in my boat that is just like yours only a year older. What does the deck under the carpet look like? Not sure what is under my "permanent" carpet.

Hey Alaboat - yeah the snap in carpet is a nice touch. The sole is fiberglass with a non skid pattern. This is the only photo I could find that's decent...

Thanks Wood! Actually since I started this post, I found and ordered the slide on inserts for vice grips on ebay

and some stainless steel snaps with longer posts for the carpet. Rented a rug dr carpet cleaner for $25 and went to town. Came out pretty nice... The inserts for the vice grips worked pretty well but had to wrap the vice grips with electrical tape so that the inserts would stay on snugly or else they would pop off under pressure. Worked out just fine and have been using the snap in carpet now for the past week or so.
