SMOKING LIKE CRAZY?

Just bought a 1993 40hp Evinrude 13' Boston Whaler that was won over 10 years ago on Price Is Right TV show. It has less than 18 hours on the motor and has been taken care of internally and externally. When I try to crank engine it turns well, sounds good, oil is in fill tube, gas is new, but it is smoking like crazy. What is this an indication of?
What should I do to remedy it?
Thanks,
Reid Lovick
Kinston, NC

Questions:

1. Oil is in what "fill tube" exactly?
2. how much TC3W oil did you put in how much gas?
3. How long did you let it run?

Often, when motors have been properly stored, there is an oil film that needs to be burned off at first, and it will smoke heavily upon first start up. If that is all it is, it should go away relatively quickly

John

Reid, sounds like this motor has VRO. Is that correct?

Re: SMOKING LIKE CRAZY?

That unit does have a VRO pump. If there is any kind of air leak on the fuel side between the pump and the tank, it will cause the pump to work overtime and will really pour the oil to the system. I would replace all fuel lines and if that didn't cure it, replace the VRO pump. If it has been sitting for a long while, the diaphram on the fuel side could be damaged. Look on the bright side, better to have too much oil than not enough.

Reid - Give some thought to scrapping the VRO system and going to pre-mix. You then do not have to think about pumps, lines, air leaks, etc.

Reid,
As Plywoody mentioned,it sounds like your motor is burning off fogging(storage)oil. If alot of fogging oil was used to winterize it,it may take a while for it to clean itself out.How long did you let it run for? Fogging oil + 2 cycle oil=lotsa smoke.Run the motor(at or slightly above idle) a while (5-10min)and see if it clears up. :)
