smokey startup

I've just serviced and restarted a '72 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 that hasn't been used for a few years. It was well stored and the cylinders were oily, so I guess they were misted. I started it in my shop, in a barrel. It started easily, but smokes quite a bit. I only ran it for about 3 minutes, choke off, but perhaps it wasn't up to operating temp.

Should I be concerned about this smoking, or will it clear up with a bit of WOT on the lake?

Re: smokey startup

That's hard to say. It really depends on if the smoke was from the misted storage procedures or fuel/oil mixture or even carb problems from sitting for a while. I wouldn't change anything until I did run it out for a while. And then if it still smokes, your problem is either a fuel/oil/air mix wrong or carbs need cleaned.

Re: smokey startup

Smoke always appears to be worse when running in a barrel. In the great outdoors it dissipates quickly. As above poster said I would not touch a thing until you've run it for a while. Running a synthetic oil will reduce the amount of smoke a 2 stroke puts out but the cost is MUCH higher in my area. I only use it on my kickers which get a lot more use than my main engine. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: smokey startup

Put it on a boat and take it out and run the heck out of it. Then get back to us.

Re: smokey startup

Thanks, guys. That was my take, but I'm not used to 2-strokes & didn't want to miss something obvious to the knowledgeable. FWIW, I used Evinrude's XD-150 synthetic at 50:1. I suspect the fogging may have been overdone.

I will follow your advice as soon as the ice is off my bay (almost there) and let you know how it goes. Getting ready for the annual Perch Festival in two weeks, so the pressure's on. :)

All the best!

I started up my 2 9.5's yesterday in a barrel, the smoke was wild, it looked like a new pope had been elected! I also suspect I may have overdid it with fogging spray also.

Re: smokey startup

To minimize any smoking in a carbureted two-stroke 9.5hp, use the Evinrude synthetic XD-100 oil at 1 pint to 6 gallons. Also be sure the carburetor, linkage synchronization, and thermostat temperature is to factory settings and specs. Use Evinrude Engine Tuner to decarbonize that 41 year old motor first.

those 9.5's were great fishing motors and for a while they were the best selling of any outboard motor.

______________
At what stage should I decarbonize? i.e. what does "first" mean?

Thanks for your interest and advice.

Re: smokey startup

Thanks for the input, guys. I ran the motor for 1/2 hour on my bay this morning (dodging ice floes) and it went like a champ. The smoke wasn't as noticeable as in the tub, and there was none after a minute or so. Nice little motor.
