smoke from lower unit

I got my '63 75hp Evinrude running today, after replacing the impeller and getting the lower unit back on. I had to start it at fairly high throttle, and it wouldnt go all the way down to minimum throttle, so I think I need to clean the carbs. Fortunately, there was water from the exhaust hole, and the head didn't get too hot to touch.

But, I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the lower unit. I had the bottom of the motor in a big bucket of water, and could see lots of smoke coming out of the water. What could this mean? I know I need to at least change the fluid/oil in the lower unit.

Thanks

Mark

Re: smoke from lower unit

Does some engine exhaust come out the L/U? While I am not a boat expert yet, the amount of smoke that came out didn't look normal. Thanks

Maybe it was flooded with fuel(premix) when started and then will smoke for a minute. I would check your linkage for the throttle and make sure it is working right.
