Is anyone using Smart tabs on their Key West? If so, did you install them, and can you comment on the ride, and on the placement of the tabs?

Re: Smart tabs

I didn't like the bow high attitude of my Key West 196BR w Yam F115. Initially I changed from the 16-k prop, to a Solas 4 blade 13x15. My hopes were that this prop would increase stern lift in the mid throttle range. It did increase stern lift, but at 5500 rpms.

I found some Smart Tabs ST1290, and installed them. Installation was just over two hours (primarily because I couldn't find my 3m 5200). Test ride was initially with 4 blade. Immediate plane at 1/2 throttle, full throttle. Corrected bow high condition, but speed dropped throughout rpm range.

I went back to 3 blade, again, boat handled great, speed was higher than 4 blade, but below 3 blade numbers w/o smart tabs at 5000 and above.

With both props I could trim out without porpoising. If I did trim out too far, it simply lost grip.

Next time I plan to decrease actuator pressure, to see if speed will increase throughout rpm range. (currently 3 blade: 4000rpm, 24mph; 4500, 27mph;5000 rpm 32 rpm).

I am pleased. I can cruise all day between 4000 and 5000 rpm with the boat at the proper attitude.

As it turns out, it appears that I bought an old set, since my set had a ball joint for attachment to the actuator, and the trim plate bracket didn't have distinct holes. Otherwise, I think it would be consistent with the current model.
