Re: Small Fire..:(

In heavy rain, water can get into the toggle switches commonly used on PTT units. When the water settles, it allows electricity to flow between the contacts that run the trim motor in the up direction. The motor will trim up and the PTT motor will continue to run until the water dries up or the battery runs down.

When you tried to trim the motor down, I will guess that both relays were energized, providing power to both wires of the motor. Perhaps you simply cooked a relay. Let's hope so, as they are cheap to replace. See if the item that was smoking is a black cube about 1/3 the size of a cigarette pack. If so, it is likely the relay. Relays and PTT motors are avail aftermarket.

I agree, dry thing out and test relays before connecting battery. As said, hope it's only the relay.

Oh Wow really... i lived in the Azores aswell, in Sao Miguel...:) are u portugues?

No, my father was stationed at Lajes Field as an American Air Force officer. He was a pilot with the 57th Air Rescue Squadron there. I have vacationed on Sao Miguel as a child. I remember hot springs that smelled of sulfur, glorious seafood, and a pineapple plantation. There was a canal or stream that ran through the hotel property with swans. Great memories!

Thank u Beefer for putting up the picture... Much Gratitude:)

Yes the afternoon was sunny and hot and things are drying up good... so hope to have it fixed tomorrow as i do have a Bass Tourny on Sunday and would really like to show the boys how a Lady does it..eheh

@Jay, wow u just made me home sick there for a minute, i kno those places well , like the palm of my hand , the Sulfur smeel stays with me everytime i think about it.. as a child my parents use to take us there every sunday, and we use to bring some of the water home with us.. not sure u had the pleasure of drinking some of the water where the hot springs are, not the hot water but the water the runs down the cliff's... i have never tasted better water :)

planning on going back next summer, as an RN'' Register Nurse'' and hardcore Bass Assassin its hard to have long periods of time off, but deff. going to take a couple weeks off next summer...ciao 4 now

The picture is showing that the cable into your trim pump needs repaired. I'm guessing the insulation wore thru and shorted to the pump case. I think that should be repaired before re-connecting the batteries. Good luck.

I would not connect battery until power lead to that motor is disconnected from the power source. That lead "SHOULD" have been fuse / breaker protected and hopefully that protection is what prevented the boat from having a major fire. It is a disaster waiting to happen as it looks like power cable is shorted to the housing.. Is that a trim pump motor or is it a hatch lift, looking at the ram right next to the BBQ'd motor connection.

Now that Beefer got a nice zoom on it, looks like the heat from the fire at least blistered the gel coat :(

I would check with Mercury to see if that wire is available separate from the pump motor. Don't turn the batteries back on till that wire is replaced!

Re: Small Fire..:(

Sorry, don't know of any videos that show a repair like this.

It may not be as bad as you think.

The motor may be fine, just burnt up wiring.

So, remove the wiring cable from the top of the trim motor and see if the wires are damaged internally.

If not, then you need to find an appropriate wire to test the motor.
If it works, then you only need to replace the cable.

Additional photo of the trim unit may help us to identify the unit you have.

Also, what is the model and year of the outboard?

Hopefully you can just replace the wiring.

This has worked for me in the past.

The Mercury replacement motor is very expensive.
If the motor is shot, you are better off replacing with a used one from ebay, or a new aftermarket unit.

Re: Small Fire..:(

Doesn't look pretty.
Probably not worth messing with.

I would just order up a new one, either from iboats, ebay, or locally.

Here are the 3 that iboats sells for that motor.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=187631&gd_row=50&**********=432613774

http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=356034&gd_row=50&**********=432613774

http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=112045&gd_row=50&**********=432613774

Then, get yourself a battery switch like the one below and mount it near your battery, so you can disconnect the battery whenever the boat is left unattended, to prevent this from ever happening again.

Re: Small Fire..:(

It appears that when the switch got wet and continuously tried to trim the motor upwards, and you tried to send it downwards, it energized both relays which tried to spin the motor both ways at once. This created a dead short at the brushes inside the motor housing, which smoked the brushes and power wiring. Should be rebuildable with new brushes so long as the windings on the armature are still intact (and presuming replacement brushes are even available), but I'm not sure what the goop in the bottom of the motor housing is...

I'm not so sure about it being OK..... The varnish on the motor windings looks burnt and when / if moisture gets in there again, the green meanies will grow pretty quick. I think that "goop" is water soaked grease, or used to be, anyway.

I would just bite the bullet and get another motor. By the time it's all over and done with after aquiring new brushes, brush holders, re-insulating windings, replacing the bearings and getting an end plate to replace the BBQ'd one, you would have spent the same $$$$$$, plus a whole lot of time making repairs to a known bad motor. The risk of burning it up again and maybe it being worse of a "fire" is too great.

Those motors are all over the internet for under a hundred fifty. Piece of mind having "new" with a warrenty....

Oh yeah, hats off to a gal that doesn't mind getting dirt under her fingernails, especially a looker. Wish my other half was like that....

Re: Small Fire..:(

Replace the pump. It looks (Pic #2) like the lower end of the motor is corroded away. If your trim is setup like my Yamaha's then that end is directly exposed to the trim fluid which would also mean you should drain/flush your trim fluid out to remove any moisture that may have gotten in through there. However I'm not sure the Mercury trims are the same so maybe someone else here could tell you for sure. I picked one up for my boat from DB electrical on ebay for about $100 and we'll see if it lasts as well as the iboats ones.
