I have a 1975 Lund big fisher. I am replacing the transom and was thinking of doing it with coosa board. Because the transom is kind a small... 60x12x1.5 coosa board is kinda expensive with a lot of scrap left over... I decided to go back to the option of wood... Because of the size I can get a peace of treated pine that will work in one solid piece. Was wondering if it would hold up to a 25hp outboard. or should I keep looking for marine plywood... Also would it be a bad idea to put a couple of drain holes in the the bottom of the transom since it is inside the boat and only goes down 3/4 of the way down the back of the boat?

buy sheet of exterior grade ACX plywood for $30. cut into two pieces 60 x 12 and sandwich together with tite-bond III. put a couple of screws in it to clamp it.

once dry, either coat with Old Timers Wood Formula or a can of oil based paint such as rustoleum and install

it will last 45 years just like the original did.

If it's a tin boat, treated is a very bad idea ( it's a bad idea in a a glass boat too ).. treated wood after 2008 contains copper, and copper and aluminum don't mix.. The wood will rot the aluminum, basically

The last time I did one, when taking it to a welder to have the cap and corners reattached, he laughed and told me to bring him the next one. He would show me where to cut it (with an angle grinder), I would do that, clean it up, and he would build me a new transom from aluminum - with no wood - very reasonably. I plan on doing just that....
