What are some good aluminum hulls that are out there in the 14ft range? I am looking to use with a 9.9hp 2 stroke Johnson. The motor used to be run on a 16ft Core Craft. The boat has been gone for years, motor still runs great but no boat...

I'd like something stable, not real tippy, but also something that will get up and go with a couple people, if possible. I have looked at the Lund SSV-14 and WC-14. The A-12/14 may be in the realm too, but my main concern is stability so it is usable, not just a boat to sit on and zip around but something that can be fished out of standing up without wobbling. Maybe that is a tall order on a 14 footer? I see the SSV-14 is rated to a 35hp motor though, so it has to be a stable boat. What other options are out there in the same category - used?

personally i like my 1991 Sea Nypmh 14K aluminum boat. its real stable and not tippy at all. currently i have a force 9.9hp on it and with a battery, full 6 gal tank, and myself i top out at 20mph. my normal outboard ( 1988 Nissan 18hp) is being fixed at the moment. that i can top out at 27mph. i go out in long island sound with it on calm days and it takes a 1ft chop with only a slight bounce. the other day a storm rolled in and i was fighting 4 ft waves entering the river. little much for that boat.

Don't look for a specific brand, I'd look for 14ftr's that have a wider beam........

I just sold a 1960 Sea Nymph R-12-A that was about 42" across the transom. The Sylvan Sea Breeze we have now is 'only' 10" wider at the transom, but significantly more stable.

I liked the Sea Nymph, but the Admiral likes the Sylvan much better. It is of course 30yrs newer then the Sea Nymph....

Not all 14ftr's are actually 14ft, IMO, most will be 13' 9". Both of my 12ftr's were 11' 9".

AND I'd rather buy a 45yr old boat from a maker I've never heard of, if it was meticulously cared for, rather then a WELL used, former fishing camp 2005 Lund.

As a buyer in WV, there aren't really going to be very many choices if I want to buy certain size boat soon. In Michigan, Wisconsin or anywhere else near the Great Lakes, there will probably be lots of boats from many different makers, conditions & prices to choose from.

Depending on what price range you're shopping in, there will also be a huge number of boats offered for sale by people that don't really have any idea who built their boat, or anything about the boat's specifics. You'll have to go look at them & decide for yourself.............

Good luck.

If you are looking to be able to stand up in a 14fter, you will probably be better off going with something newer that has a flat floor in it and doesn't have the rowboat style bench seats.

I had a mid 80's Alumacraft that I put removable floor pieces in and a deck up in the front with a raised seat. It was very stable and wide for a 14fter, but that middle seat was always a pain in the butt to work around with 2 people fishing.

Lots of good 14' aluminum boats out there as it is a popular size, however one part of your question concerns me.... You mentioned zipping around with a couple people in it with only a 9.9 hp motor.. It will zip around with only one person rather nicely but....when you start adding people and fishing gear things are really going to slow down in a hurry so you may want to consider something more than your 9.9 hp. I had a sylvan 14 with a 15 hp jonnyrude and it would just get about 18mph with two adults and fishing gear, just enough to get up on plane but any kind of wave would slow it down off plane. A 25 hp would have been a much better choice.

I did a little research and see that the Core Craft, as best I can tell from their 50's thru 60's line up, had a beam width of 53", 16ft boat. That boat ran fine with the 9.9. So I am guessing any boat with a beam of 60" or better would be more stable, regardless of length (14' vs 16').

We still have our Sea Nymph 14R that i bought in 1986 with an Evinrude 9.5. The wife and I and our two pre-teen sons had more fun in that boat that could be imagined. Was it a speed deamon? No. Did it get us there in good time safely and with low fuel consumption. Yes! Don't let the 9.9 scare you. If you want something a little more stable than a SN, go with a deep V Starcraft with a full flat floor. We have one of those as well and she does very nicely with a 25.
