Slipping prop sensation

pulling my kids on boards this weekend in deep water i noticed what seemed like prop was slipping ...... i have a v-drive ( wagner) has anyone experienced this and what did you find out.
this boat is well cared for and garage kept bought in 2003 new

rpm's go up but mph does not? slipping trans. had mine repaired for 1800 a couple years ago.
