Re: Slalom Ski Recommendations

I don't mind dropping a ski. Problem is, since I'm not very good yet, I tend to fall fairly often. I just get tired of having go back for that dang ski so I can get up again.

Yeah, the overhead in dropping the ski is kind of annoying, especially on a busy lake.

Yeah that's true. It's never been a big deal for us because my mom always drops it right by our dock those 2 or 3 times a year she skis.

Re: Slalom Ski Recommendations

Hey guys, I was thinking about bidding on a Connelly Super Sidecut Mid Slalom ski. I noticed that this ski has 500 sq. in. and the newer Big Daddy advertises over 550 sq. in. How much of a difference do you think the extra 50 sq. in. will make? Worth spending another $100 for a new one? Tell me what you think please. :)

Oh, and get this. A couple days ago, I just missed out on an almost new Big Daddy with a wet suit and a nice life jacket for $100 on CL. Major bummer.:(

Okie - I'm only guessing, but I'd bet that extra real estate would help out. But someone else will know better than me since I'm still not much of a skier.

Our marina is having a clearance this weekend and the guy is trying HARD to sell me some wide skis.

I might have to upgrade my life jackets just to get him to leave me alone.

Yeah, 50 square inches is quite a bit. I just can't decide if I want to go for it though, and the auction is over at 11pm tonight. I'm just chompin at the bit to try one.

If you have a good chance of selling them if you don't like them, maybe go for it?

I've been waiting to here from you skibrain. That's the deal that I mentioned a couple of posts ago. It's already sold. :( There's 38 mins left on the super sidecut ski auction, what do you think? Should I wait for a bona fide big daddy?

Nevermind. Lost the auction, then ordered a brand new big daddy as soon as it was over.;)

Re: Slalom Ski Recommendations

My dad is a big guy (5'11 250ish) and has a great old Kidder slalom. He can still rip 65mph passes and he's getting close to 50. I learned on that ski, and it is about 72" long.

I got my mom's genes and check in at 5'9 160 so I had to jump way down. I tracked down Kidder and they still exist under the name D3. Bought a 65" Custom X and it rocks! It is flat scary to think how fast that little SOB cuts. I highly recommend checking out D3. Denny Kidder is a genius. A fair warning though; you need a shorter ski for faster cuts and better course runs, but they beat the hell out of you! I still ride dad's old ski when I want to cruise.

I'll probably never run a slalom course, so I'm just interested in cruising for now. I'll give that Big Daddy a try, should be here in a couple days. I'll give it a go this weekend and report back. I just want to get up on one ski for goodness sake.

Glad to hear you ordered a ski.
Did someone say D3? :) I had this one for 5 years. Riding an X5 this year.

Yeah man, I ordered a ski and I'm freakin pumped!!! I won't get to use it til the weekend, but I'm chopin at the bit for it to come in.:D I got impatient and just went for a brand new one, instead of waiting around for another used one to come around. Thanks for your input Skibrain, you da man.:D

Re: Slalom Ski Recommendations

Surely I won't need one that big. It doesn't look like it would perform very well once I get to the point where I'm cutting pretty good. Looks like someone screwed some bindings to a surfboard.:D But who knows, I might just be to fat for the big daddy. Cross your fingers for me.

Looks to me like the wakeboarders could mount their bindings sideways on that plank and go to town.

Surely the Big Daddy can help get you up. Now all you need a good boat driver to do the rest!! :)

Got my Big Daddy in today, Woohoo! Good Lord it's huge! Can't wait to hit the water this weekend. It came with a little ding on one edge up toward the front though:mad: Don't think it will hurt anything, but still kinda hacked me off.

Take a camera along when you go. Post photos. Photos in threads make them even more fun to read. :)
