The skeg is broke off.... Whats the most economical/best way to go about fixing it? Can you acutally use one of the bolt on skeg replacement things? Or do i need someone to weld another whole one on? I have some friends that are welders, can they just do it? Or does it have to be done by a specific person?
links to places for things to buy would be awsome... Thanks guys

addict;

If you provide the s/n of the Merc, we can get you the parts listing.

I suppose you don't have the broken off bits bit if there is enough material, you can certainly have a new one welded on.

Type in "skeg repair" in the search engine at the top right of this page

I would recommend you use a good welder. You do not want to take the gearcase apart, nor do you want the rubber seals melted by excess heat. A good welder will be able to fix it up w/o and disassembly or damage.

I would not grind anything off until you get the replacement skeg. There out there. just do some Googling.

Let the welder do the grinding. The prop shop I trust with my engine actually makes the repair line zig zag or serpentine. Additional weld length and angles greatly strengthens the repair.

I've x-rayed his work, and you can't even see the weld.

Martin x-rayed?
I know that is the way to make sure for a complete weld, and penetration, and no voids.
It is only a skeg.

I work at a tank fabricator where they do cobalt source x-ray weld inspection. No way I could afford to actually purchase the service.

It's pretty handy to have 50 or 60 world class welders for personal friends.

Skegs HAVE to be welded strong. They go through alot of pressure when hitting somthing or turning. I had one welded once that broke off within two trips. Water is a strong force when something is blasted through it.

I just picked up on the comment "It's only a skeg."

If I lost a skeg on my boat at speed, it'd do a bat turn and pitch me out, probably through the gunwale. It's a pretty important control surface.

I callled down to the local prop shop... And the guy told me not to purchase a replacement skeg.. He said they will fix it there for anywhere between 75-115 dollars. They will provide the skeg too...

Guess i gotta go down there and see what they can do.

1. I would make sure the motor is in good running condition before you mess with the skeg. You may be putting the cart in front of horse.????

Yeah, i know... Im going over the whole thing. It needs a new internal and external wiring harness, and probably a fresh tune up. But im just getting all my ducks lined in a row. Hell, Im still putting my splashwell back in..
Ripped out deck/transom/stringers... Replaced with new and added knee braces to the back. Its all starting to come back together now. I need to sand like crazy, do some patch glassing, and gelcoat.. Then start hanging stuff back on the boat.
