I am new to boating. My son bought a 78 Skeeter bass boat 15 ft long. I was wondering if anyone knows what size engine it might have come with. It has a 55 hp Johnson on it now. Some one put a 1/2' piece of plywood on the outside of the transom with 2/4's on the inside. One at the top and one under the basic inside of the transom. I have not removed the wood from the outside but the boat on the inside looks to be ok. I was wondering if this might have been added because of the bigger engine. I was looking at replacing the plywood with 3/8 marine/aircraft plywood and 1/4 aircraft aluminum strips on the outside and somemore aluminum on the inside and removing the 2/4's.

Re: Skeeter boat

I bought a 76 Skeeter 15-16' a few years ago to get the engine & trailer, and it had the original Merc. 50.

All that transom reinforcing on your boat might be because its rotted. Pull some bolts out and take off the top cover plate to see the original wood. You should be able to tell pretty quick.

That transom is rotted..all of the early Skeeters had horrible structure problems if they weren't taken baby care of. You don't see too many from that 70-80s era that don't have transom rot.

Re: Skeeter boat

It may have totally different rating but I have a 15 ft. 1987 Skeeter Strada that has a 1987 70 hp Yamaha. It is either equipped with the wrong prop or is under powered. Planing takes forever.
