I've seen racing tunnels flip and go under. They'll get a rope on the nose of them, and drag them to shore and on their trailers.

They'll pop the 6 spark plugs, blow out the water, change fuel tanks and make the next race.

Modern outboard motors are different animals than the old stack 6 Merc. outboards, however.

Doesn't surprise me at all it sank that fast. Tunnels are notorious for being tail heavy. I'm assuming while sitting still part of the rear deck is covered by water. Wouldn't take that much to have it start coming over the transom, especially as it fills with the plug out.

Hopefully he pulled the plugs right away when it was back on the trailer to drain the cylinders and sprayed WD-40 or the like to coat the cylinders/rings to keep them from rusting. Turn it over more to get everything coated, repeat a couple of times, and run it briefly providing the gas wasn't full of water. Maybe someone would offer an auxiliary tank to run it. Sounds highly unlikely with the crowd that was there.

Good job sub2010, I would have been right beside ya. I would hope someone would help me if I was in the same predicament. Sounds like a Father's Day to me......Helping our fellow man in distress....

Good info. I didn't know all that either but it sure makes sense.

Ahhh well in that case I revert back to the long list of work....

Either way I'm sure he headed right to the garage to get it dried out.

As a Minnesota boater, it isn't hard to forget one of the things on your pre launch check list since we can't have our plugs in...it is actually illegal to leave your hitch on your tow vehicle when not towing as well. I forgot the plug one time just as I was about to push the boat off my roller trailer (roller trailers barely touch the water) and suddenly the scuppers started spitting out water when the bildge pump kicked on. I was a half of a second from big trouble but was the only time the pump ever got used.
