Simple answer. Probably not the switch.

Now, if you want to get into some detail, knowing things like what you are working on might help.

Re: simple trim switch question

Sorry, I was under the assumption all mercruiser drives used the same system(but differnt switches )
94 glastron 215 ssv elite. 5.0 ls with alpha 1

So if the trim up limit switch were bad, the trimup button wouldn't work even in neutral? Is there perhaps another switch that the circuit must go through when in gear? My phone wont let me download the manual

Re: simple trim switch question

Go through this troubleshooting guide, should lead right to the problem.

Re: simple trim switch question

Looked over th schematics, didn't see anything that should cause the issue im seeing unless the "neutral to instrament gauge" switch means more than I think it does or the gen 2 is missing a switch that my gen 1 has(and this schematic doesn't show it)
thoughts? Wrong schematic? Neutral switch to gauges serves what purpose?
The troubleshooting guide didn't mention anything about working in neutral but not in gear so perhaps I definately need a diff manual

I think I may have misread your original post. In your throttle control, the trim switch wiring wraps around the handle ablut three times to make it flexible. Check the green wire for breaks. When going to fwd, it probably is pulling the wire apart.

Re: simple trim switch question

I just opened up the shifter to re-grease and tightened the trim switch and install 1/4" bolts holding the shift assembly where some one had used 10-32s that let it wiggle all over the place. My trim wiring came straight up the housing, across the round lever pivot, then up the handle. I pulled some slack in the wires and ty-wrapped the wires under the console to keep them from pulling tight. Should I have wrapped them around the round lever pivot or around the shift lever housing then up the shift handle? My first time to ever open one of these up.

Re: simple trim switch question

What you are describing is really confusing... The wires get wrapped around 3 times (like Don S. Said) around and behind the handle. On a quicksilver commander 3000. It's never a straight shot from behind the control box to the handle... Ultimately, the problem has to be a wire though. The 2 systems (trim and shift) only have 1 point of intersection. The control box. Other than that, they are independent of eachother. The trim pump doesn't care if the engine is at WOT. In reverse... You hit the trim button, and it will go in that direction until your limit switch stops it...

It has to be a wire.

Take it apart. Test while wiggling and pulling, fix the issue. and put it together the right way.

Bassngoats, I think you got me mistaken with cliff p

Thanks guys, realized yesterday that it also will trim up in reverse so I am sure you guys are 100% correct. Thanks again!
