I'm trying to remove the tilt mechanism on my newly acquired '93 evinrude 40. Both the tilt pin and the upper pin are firmly siezed in place. I don't think they have ever been removed in 18 years of saltwater use. I would love to learn of any tricks for accomplishing this.

There simply isn't any easy way. One of the worst jobs there is. Heat, hammer, and cuss. Then replace whatever you destroyed. Anybody says saltwater doesn't hurt them, let them fix it.

Heat, heat and heat. Use only brass drifts on the pins with a BFH. The drift will mushroom out before the pin.

Thanks for responding. So it's heat and hammer and hope for the best. Would you advise heat gun, MAP gas, or acetylene?

Acetylene is the only thing that will get that massive aluminum hot enough.

Be carefull with the acetylene if you never used it. The alum can puddle real fast. But it is still the best.
