I have eaten a lot of shrimp and many have different flavors. Some are sweet and taste fresh. Others that are supposed to be fresh taste like iodine or chlorine.
Are there any shrimpers on here who can set me straight on what is put on shrimp as a preservative? How long do fresh shrimp stay fresh? Is it better to buy frozen shrimp?
Most of the shrimp I eat come from the Gulf.

If you're eating a lot of shrimp now, it might not be Gulf Shrimp. We seem to be having residual effects of the Macondo blowout and the white shrimp season seems to be pretty much a bust - ay least, that's what the shrimpers are saying.

It's the ammonia smell in seafood that indicates it's bad. Iodine is naturally occurring in shrimp and is what many people who are allergic to shrimp are reacting to. The best preservative for shrimp is ice. Lots and lots of ice.

I've heard that some sellers and resturants will add a few drops of clorox to bulk fresh shrimp to extend it's shelf life. It cuts the very strong odor when they start to spoil. I have tasted the ones you describe and they're awfull. If your getting them in Arkansas frozen might be more apt to be tasty than "fresh". But I'm no expert, except on eating them:D boiled shrimp, fried shrimp, shrimp cocktail, BBq shrimp, shrimp gumbo, shrimp and grits............

Fresh shrimp and fish do not have a long shelf life.

Most of the shrimp I eat and that you see in a super market are farmed raised tiger shrimp from Asia. My daughter works for a company that I buy the shrimp at a very resonable price. Best way to buy them is IQF's that are frozen individually, raw and you can take what ever quanity out of the package and keep the rest frozen. The only time you want to buy them cooked, is if you are going to have them as an horderve. Most people over cook shrimp.

Here where I live the shrimp season starts the end of January and they are tasty much better then the Asian shrimp, but our native shrimp are small compared to down south.

If you can smell any small odor it is not fresh.

If it stinks it aint fresh,Fish shrimp or anything else for that matter,But garlic helps a lot..
If I buy shrimp (tiger) I almost always cook them the same day...
Never smelled or tasted anything funky,Maybe you should try the tiger shrimp!

I've sworn off all shrimp, unless. they are "natural". Meaning, Gulf, Alaskan, etc. The farm raised stuff tastes different. I spent a few years in New Orleans and I know what shrimp should taste like.

The others are correct. If you smell anything, out of sorts, they are bad.

Really Fresh shrimp, or most other seafood, smell like the ocean. The longer it's stored if not frozen, the more it smells and tastes bad.
