About 3 hours of sunshine on Cape Cod this July 4th . . . rained much of the morning and now some sun before the 5:00 thunderstorm rolls in. It feels gross outside though . . . humidity

I took a closer look at the axle assembly before cutting it up into more bite-size pieces for the dump.

The u-bolts had disintegrated on one side, so not much was holding this together.

The old control box is still in decent shape, probably re-storable; the cables move freely. I've come to realize the shifting within the engine is causing the operational woes, and probably not the control box. (See my Evinrude thread)

Wow that spring assembly is a mess I'm surprised you were able to get the boat to the launch ramp...

The Whaler's time on the water this season was short-lived. Looked to be an ignition problem, and on closer look the wire harness was a crumbling mess in some places.

I ordered a new wire harness and got it all hooked up . . .

After figuring out there was no fuse provided in the new harness, I got the engine running.

It was then when I realized that the fuel pump was leaking badly . . . pump rebuild kit is on order.

I took a look at the trailer, with the boat back on it . . . Next area of attention for the trailer are the roller mounting brackets and on of them failed when we retrieved the boat.

Many years ago I bought an old tinny for $600. The engine was pristine and the boat WAS pristine after many hours of labor. The trailer....well...

Initially, I replaced the wires, tires, springs, coupler, bunks and sandbasted and rust reformed the frame and topcoated it with rustoleum. The paint job lasted many years, butt.....

It was our vacation boat / camping and local fishing boat for many years. More memories than I can count. Our boys grew up in her......butt.

Every vacation I spent half the time at camp fixing the old trailer and going to NAPA buying parts.

Finally, I bit the bullet and bought a brand new Load Rite galvanized trailer. At $550 is cost as much as the boat and motor. But no more hassle.

Trailers are too often forgotten.

Anyone know why some of these blocks were painted white and others black?

I should have the fuel pump repair kit in the next couple of days. Meanwhile, I've been working on the shifting and throttle levers/linkages at the engine. They were very stiff, making the shifting and throttle control very difficult. I got the shift lever loosened up (it seems like the pivot arm that goes into the housing just under the lower cowl was binding up). It has a grease fitting, but it won't take any grease since it is seized so tightly. I even removed the grease zerk to get some PB blaster and solvents in there. After about 2 hours of such, it has loosened up. Now working on the throttle side.

I'd like to get this boat back in the water soon, as I need to do more work on the trailer. One of the roller supports collapsed when I took the boat out to work on the engine. So, I got to replace the supports and related hardware.

I'm sure by then the impeller will fail or something . . .

You paint some blue and others white.----Then someone says ---" just paint them all black " and save money.----But a motor painted white is easier to work on.

If I get the engine running properly, I can think about painting it. . . . or . . . If I find something newer in black, then maybe could make a clean swap out.

While waiting for the fuel pump kit I was able to fix the mini bilge pump that was not working. It turned out to be a wiring issue.

All my Evinrudes are blue. No matter what era, the color tint matches the outside.

All my late model Johnsons are are white. During the "Red" era the power heads were red. The older ones are silver, again to match the leg.

The point is that they usually matched the leg.

The only black ones I have are Mercs.

It turned out that the fuel pump kit was the wrong one. It seems that there are 2 very similar fuel pumps, but they are not exact. The parts list may have called out the wrong kit. So, the day's plans were scrubbed.

I ordered an entire new fuel pump.

OK . . . New fuel pump installed and the engine is back up and running.

There was a fairly large (and rusty) lifting arm for the now defunct trim/tilt system, which I removed by way of the impact driver. It makes for an easier reach for the tilt lock latch.

The LU had a fair amount of corrosion on it, which I ground off. Re-primed and re-painted.

I may try to re-launch the Whaler soon, as the roller supports on the trailer need some attention. One of them collapsed (from deterioration) when we took the boat out.

New struts for the trailer rollers and a new keel roller installed. Just in time to take the Whaler out of the water for the season.
