Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., offered the resolution demanding a pullout. The GOP-run House was expected to reject it — and make a prominent statement about where Congress stands on Iraq......
Murtha, a well-respected Vietnam veteran who voted for the Iraq war , called for the immediate withdrawal of troops Thursday......
Independent of how we got there should we continue the cause or pull out ASAP.
The powers to be seem to be attempting to force the issue through Congressional action.

Yes poll, but to me this is a silly question. We have to stay. I want our worlwide reputation to be the fixer uppers that we are. Not half-arse messer uppers and splitsville.

No military experience here, no kid over there etc. etc. but my .02 with my limited knowledge.

Would you walk out on a job little more than half done just because it was tougher than you thought it would be? Would you expect any respect afterward?

Quitting now would:

1. Label us forever as the nation that abandoned the Iraqis in trouble that we got them into.

2. Completely shatter any world belief in our credibility.

3. Open us to all sorts of attacks, political and terror.

A completely stupid and dishonorable idea.

I am with JB on this. I sure hope they don't get us labeled like that again

Stay until the country is stable or until they can handle it themselves. We put too much blood into this to chicken-out now. I'm not happy we're there, but at this point we have no choice. If we leave now, things will go downhill FAST! Our standing in the world is pretty bad because of Iraq. Pull out now and what little credibility we still have will tank and the middle East will decend into a Chaos that would quickly go out of control and make the Holocaust look like Romper Room. I'm not against a scheduled phase-out, but to just cut and run? NO!

I think we need to either:

1. Wait till the Iraqi election, then inform the new Iraqi leader (privately) that it is time for them to shoulder the load, and give a date certain (and soon) for them to be ready, willing, and capable of taking over.

2. Put in enough troops to seal all the border areas, clean out the neighborhoods, ban any sort of non-governmental firearms or explosives, and by whatever means necessary get the job done. This may involve reinstituting the draft, but so be it. If it takes a half million men, it takes that many, but man it to get the job done, and do it.

No. We stay until Iraq is stable and self-governing.

We need to stay until its done. Further more, we need to set a timeline that the Iraqi government needs to follow. If we don't give them this timeline, they will just sit there and let us do the work forever. If they are told we are leaving in 1 year or 2 years, they will be more inclined to get straight. We can only do so much for them. If they don't build up the will to take control of their country, we will always have to be there. It takes time, I know, but at this point that country should have a good idea of whether they like freedom or not. If they like the sample they have tasted, they will buy the product. If they don't like it, they will fall to ruin shortly after we leave. We can only do so much, the rest is on them.

I am not saying we should pull out, but let's get some direction. Presently, it appears that we are just there waiting for them to run out of suicide bombers. Everytime they lose one, we lose several. Just does not appear to be the correct way to accomplish anything.

Somebody please tell me what W is doing to accomplish his objectives. He also said the war ended long, long ago. Then why do our soldiers keep dying at the hands of the enemy? Something has to change.

Hmm, pullout..that sounds suspisciously like what happened in Viet Nam. That worked out wonderfully, lets try it again. (sarcasm)

CJY, the war against Saddam's regime is over. We are now fighting a different war with the terrorists from Iran, Syria and other countries that dont want a democratic Iraq. It has been documented that the majority of the 'insurgents' are not Iraqi, they are from other nations. Hopefully, the Iraqi's are getting tired of foreigners blowing up their families and will rise up against them.

I was against going there in the first place,But I agree with most,it would be a big mistake to quit now.The Repubs, are ruining theirselves by staying. If they leave, the Demos.will kill the Repubs. The ONLY way that place will EVER be stableis to have another Shadam Hussane.

I think we are playing into the hands of the islamic fanatics by staying in Iraq.
We are bogged down in a no win situation and trying to turn that situation around will cost lives and resources that should be used to prepare for the bigger tests.Iran and North Korea are both developing nuclear weapons. They will probably use them to at least try and blackmail America and the west.Right now we do not have the power to stop these nations and we are bleeding resources at a high rate.
We are in for a long haul war and Irak is one battle. One that we should not be wasting too much time on.
Iran is about to become the next battle field because of its nuclear potential that must be neutralized before it is ready enough to be used.
We are trying to win a war and a strategic withdrawal from a swamp can only improve our odds for the final outcome of this war

Pull out did work wonderfully in Viet Nam. We lost some 50 thousand American troops before the pull out, and we have hardly lost any since.

And Viet Nam is reasonably peaceful today, certainly no threat to us, and in fact is a significant trading partner.

All in all, I think the tactic worked pretty well.

As far as the Iraqi's rising up against the foreigners, time will tell, I suppose. I have heard varying reports on this, and polling suggests that some 80 % of Iraqis don't want us there. And just as in Viet Nam, either they want their freedom or they don't, but if we keep fighting their battles forever, they are free to do all the political posturing and games to garner power for their individual little cliques instead of defending their country against the "intruders"

How about if you go live a year in the squalor the average vietnamese lives in and then tell me how good they have it under communist rule?

The dems today squawking about wanting to cut and run from Iraq are no better than the sKerry's of the '70's that gave aid and comfort to the north vietnamese.

funny some one should mention enough troops to seal the borders, maybe that should have been done a bit before the mission accomplished photo op. the fact is we are there, most there dont want us there, they really never saw us as "liberators" and once we leave it will return to the way it was in the 50's and 60's. saddam was about the most stable influence and that was not much.
fact is we are there and since we ousted saddam in 03 the regoin has destabilized into a total heck hole due to incompetent planning from some place. to just pull out next week will be crazier than invading in 03.
the Iraqi Govt will never work. to much bad blood between the peoples indiginous to Iraqs current borders.
we need to replace the infastruture we destroyed and leave in a fairly orderly manner. however there is no actuall "winning" of this battle. aint gonna happen.
so if it aint gonna happen there is no sense in building the proposed 8 military bases there.
the borders should have had a bit more protection, if ya dont believe it show me all the news stories you can find concerning suicide bombing in Iraq prior to 03, the occasional assasination attempt not withstanding.

rolmops, care to outline your plan for "nuetralizing" Iran?
I guess we can ask the africans cause I dont think the brits and aussies and canucks will back us about now.
