Its the shift linkage off of a 79 70 hp Johnson. seems to me when looking at the way things line up it should be straight. doesn't look stressed and paint isn't even nicked

Nope.

Just GUESSING... but my gut suggests your shift linkage could use some touching up to get it dead nuts centered. Could be normal wear & tear as gears and shift dog live out their lives, or could be ever-so-slightly-loose hardware.

Agreed.. This is my first endeavor with an outboard. and this is a new to me boat. i think I got most of the little things worked out new water pump kit ,fuel hoses all rep[laced, carbs cleaned, fuel pump rebuilt. compression, timing all good. I,ve disassembled the control box cleaned, lubed and tomorrow i will be attempting to get it adjusted. I guess Ill start with straightening that rod. My manual showed up today and i have adjusted some of the linkages as shown in the manual and they were all off including the shift rod to the lower. so hoping it will all come together quickly. then on to bilge pump and live well upgrades.

yes its a little bent the lug where the cable fits onto should be parallel with the stud where the gear linkage arm bolts onto to me it looks like it needs to be repaired

The factory exploded parts diagram calls that a belcrank. 386802. According to their diagram, yours appears to be bent. Check out: epc.brp.com Looks like those two pins should be parallel.

look like someone didnt know the trick on how to remove the cable so went cave man on it.
