I'm in the middle of a bellows, shift cable job on a 84 4winns santara with the 898 engine. My question is since i put the boat in forward and removed the shift cables to remove the out drive will i still be able to turn to engine over by hand (breaker bar on crankshaft nut)? Thanks

yes, Shifting takes place in the outdrive, if you are doing a bellows and shift cable, your drive isn't connected. You shift your drive into fwd to align the shift linkage couplers

With the drive removed - the only thing you wil be fighting is engine compression.

Why would you want to do that?,and using the nose bolt it can break .
you can still use the ign. key for that.
If your worried about spline alignment, we usually lube the new impeller, shift drive into fwd and ocking the prop CCW, and turning the prop CCW to slightly turn the drive shaft to line the splines up .
