Should my boar carb idle act like a car carb?

Guys,
My 2000 5.0 GL PEFS (cold) starts on the first crank every time but I've noticed just recently that when it starts it doesn't idle up when it a cold start. Should it? I'm beginning to think the choke isn't working correctly because hot starts are sometimes tough and once it does start there's a very gassy smell. Any ideas on what may be wrong here?

No, there are no fast idle cams on boat carburetors. Thus is done for a reason

How are you setting the choke?

Hello,
I'm not setting the choke. This engine has an auto choke on the carb that is one of the spring loaded heated types and I wasn't sure if this was what is causing the hot flooding or not.

You need to set the choke just like a 1970s truck. You need one full pump forward to prime and allow the choke to close. The throttle needs to be partially open as there is no fast idle cam. Then as you are running, the toaster element in the choke slowly opens the choke

Your hot flooding could be an improperly adjusted or operating choke

Ok, yes I do move the throttle forward once before starting. I didn't realize this was setting the choke. I need to keep the cover off the next time I stop to see if the choke is closing on me when the engine is hot as I suspect this could be causing the flooding.
