Should I worry about getting much water in my boat?

I hope to be able to get started on the Batboat in the next few weeks but am worried about one thing I read a lot about here; getting water in the boat.

Not from leaks but from it coming in from over the deck from normal boating.

There is going to be no place to walk around in the boat when I am finished. The seats and steering dash will be moved back over one foot, a newclear reactor installed behind, with about a 2 1/2 to 3 foot space between it and the splashwell.

The boat will be like sitting in a cockpit with no room to move around. Not a pleasure craft at all. Get in from the dock and sit down. That's all.

How much water can I expect the boat to take on during a normal river cruise?

I haven't driven a boat in about 20 - 25 years. This is my first one. :D

It looks like that will depend on how you drive it,if you drive it crazy and it flips or something like that you will take on some water, drive it like an other boat should not take on any more water than an other boat (cool boat),it looks like fun anyway. Jim

depends on your speed, weather and water conditions.

This is a 14 foot boat and I have a 35 hp motor that may or may not actually give me the 35hp. I don't know what speed I will have.

I will only be boating carefully on sunny days because this will also be displayed to Sci-Fi conventions and car shows.

I intend to make it to take on a little spray and store it in a garage/car port but I worry about it getting the extensive rot it has right now in 10 - 15 years time.

Only worry is you have too many items on the utility belt....... it could be tough to tread water!

bilge pump. store bow up, with plug out. one thing people don't realize is you can rip a t-shirt in about a 2 inch strip 18 inches long. insert 6 inches into the drain hole so it hit the bottom of the bilge, left the rest just hand down, the cloth will act as a wick, and drain any remaining water out.

Holy Rapunzell! That just solved one of my problems. My boat took on a little water when I launched it last week and some of it is still in there. Thanks! :D

also darren....when you rebuild it ....just do it with the idea or mentality that water is supposed to be there....that way it will be water proofed when water does get in there.....

btw.....sometimes on heavy usage, quite a bit of water can get in a boat. from people getting in when water is still pouring off them.....my boat had actually submarined in heavy water twice.

but your boat is allmost totally covered by deck. i would imagine that you would get very little in it

cheers

I am a little bit worried about that gallon of water it took when you floated it last week. It should have taken no water while floating at the dock. Check around for any stray holes in the hull, and get them fixed. I has poorly sealed hole on my boat by the speedometer pickup when I floated it last month. After sealing it up, it took no water for the hour I had it floating the next day. Even if you have rot in the boat, there should be no leaks in the hull.

I would sure hate for you to need the shark repellant, just to find it expired after 40 years! :D

this is good advise.........id really check it out....a gallon is a lot of sweat.
(boats will sweat.....condensation forming on the inside of the hull, depending on daily conditions).....after youve ripped it all down to the bare hull.....put it in the water with some weight in it...take a case of sody pops with ya and sit in it and watch...........(boat builders do some pretty weird stuff somtimes).
