Should I trade??

I spent the winter re doing the floor and stringers and carpet in my small 14 foot fiber glass boat..

after taking it out a few times this year, it wasnt long before i realized i wanted a bigger boat lol so i thought i would start hunting on my local classified site (kijiji) to trade mine in for a bigger one that needs a bit of work to get it going.

I came in to contact will a fellow today who said that his 1971 16 foot boat is a little too much for his 4 cylinder ranger.
In his add (and through multiple emails back and forth) He says that it is ready to go for the water like mine is.

Now that we have talked quite a bit today im am getting pretty nervous because this was my first boat, and i put a lot of time into making sure the floor and stringers were re done properly.. and i really dont want to get ripped off.. and i dont know anything about inboard or i/o board motors.. so thats not helping my confidense either.

I thought about it and decided i would post something up on here to get some of your opinions because this site has always helped me make my boat decisions in the past and i always appreciate the help i get here.

Here is a pic or 2 of my 1966 leavens brother mariner with 40hp outboard. all running lights bildge pump motor all work without problems. comes with 2 deep cell batteries and a brand new transom mount trolling motor.. all works great.
also have a lot more pics on on here is my thread called 1966 leavens brother mariner help.

the gelcoat on my boat still needs to be painted or shined back to life.. other than that its a solid boat.

Re: Should I trade??

here is the link to the add for his boat.. i know there isnt a whole lot to go off from it.. i was just hoping someone could tell me if there is any known problems for these types of motors? or boats.. he said its a 1971 grew.

also just wanted to see if you guys that it would be worth the drive out there for me so we can put them in the water and test them out.

do you think if we test them out and his boat runs good that it would be a good deal for me to trade? or would it be more of a matter of preference at that point? I'm just looking for any info i can get because im not going to trade unless i 100% know its worth it for me.

I hope you guyd can get a good idea from what ive said.. but i know it would be hard to say just judging by what youve seen on here.. any help or advise will still be very much appreciated as always.. and thanks for taking the time to read this

Re: Should I trade??

Go take a look at the other boat, take it for a ride and if everything seems ok take the other guy for a ride in yours. Since you've done so much work on your boat you have a general idea of what to look for as far as major items on the other boat. As long as there's nothing major wrong, and it runs ok it sounds like a good deal. You've already said you want a bigger boat, here's your chance.

The boat in the add is missing the flame arrestors and whats the staining on the transom?

Are you going out into bigwater or just looking for a bigger boat?

My first was a 1959 LoneStar Arrow.....and then a Pelican Explorer, Glasspar Avalon, Starcraft JetStar, SunRunner 235....... I like my old runabouts, they're what boating was meant to be, FUN!

I have a runabout and it serves my purpose. Its light and solid and easy for just me to use. The OP has it ready to enjoy so I say enjoy it

Re: Should I trade??

The add stated OMC, which means hard to find parts. I would not do it.(IMHO)

OMC stringer outdrive

Pass.

Flame arrestors are a vital safety component required on i/o motors.
Prevents a backfire from coming thru the carb and causing an explosion.

There is only seating for 2 people in that boat, what are you gaining?

Pass.

Re: Should I trade??

well im not too concerned about the amount of seats right now.. i just wanted more room to move around when fishing or bringing the dog. I wasnt sure if it was just the pic that made it look like there wasnt much more room there than what i already have.. either way, i think you are right.. not really gaining much to go through all of the work of trading..and there is only so much ill be able to tell from a quick test drive.. I have a sneaky feeling that its going to cost me quite a bit to get this bad boy up to par for my liking.. I really dont like the sound of those flame arrestors not being there.. thats something i would have never noticed lol and it makes me think of all the other stuff that will break my bank

This is why i love iboats so much.. tends to open my eyes when im not thinking clearly lol Thanks to everyone for their advise and tips.. always serves me well.

just for curiosity.. how much would a flame arrestor cost for that bad boy?

and thanks again!

Re: Should I trade??

From what little I understand about the subject, it sounds like the "flame arrestors" are nothing more than a backfire screen. This is common in high performance dirtbikes, like Honda CRF450s, Yamaha YZF450, KTMs, etc. There is a screen between the carb and airfilter that prevents flames from igniting the filter and housing, causing everything to go up in smoke. Of course, this only has the possibility of happening if the motor were to backfire. If its tuned properly, that shouldn't be an issue. If I'm completely off the subject, please correct me.

Take it from someone in the middle of replacing the OMC stuff on his boat. You want to pass (your dog will understand:D)

I know nothing about OMC stringers, except from what I read on here and there is not many that will tell you to pick up that boat with an OMC stringer. From what I understand, they are next to impossible to get parts for. Plus, OMC went out of business in the early 90's and parts in general will continue to get more and more difficult to find. I'm far far from an expert, but I would say pass as well.

...wast ya got is two footitis. Most of us have been aflicted with this. The symptoms are, looking at bigger/faster boats on line while at work, at home, daughters play, coffee shop et.
You find one you believe will suit your needs and voila! No more money in the account because the props are more, the maintenance is more, the taxes are more, it drinks fuel at an astounding rate,........ and then the boat sits in the driveway because the "Fun" is gone.

I was struck with two footitis (wife will contest to this) but I found I have more fun with my cramped little boat that has no leg room, wont hold two people and fishin gear comfortably, slower than molasses in January, cant handle waves bigger than 6 inches.... But, Its good on fuel, prop was cheap, impeller was really cheap. It gets us from point A to point B (eventually) and we have "Fun".

Just my opinion..... stick with your first for a while and keep the idea alive, you might find an unbelievable deal on a great boat down the road.

its a 2.5 liter twin-carbed (120hp) OMC stringer missing the flame arrestors. PASS ON IT.

Worrying about flame arrestors missing on that boat is like pouring out a cup of coffee to a lake that is already 6 feet overfull and worrying about what extra harm it would do.
