I have a 1978 Johnson 70hp and these are the 2 problems I'm having. First, my idle is way to high when in neutral. I know I need to adjust my screws, but I can't get them just right for some reason. Secondly, I have to push my throttle to about 20 degrees before my engine wakes up and goes forward. Even then, it doesn't plane. I told my local marine shop about the problem, but they waon't be able to take my boat in the near future because business is so backed up. I figure I need to either adjust my throttle & shift cables or just go ahead and replace them to save the headache. What could I do to get my boat on the water immediately?

First off, your engine may not be healthy, if it will not plane. Is it "hitting" on all three cylinders?

What is the compression on all three?

Do not mess around with any adjustments until you figure out if the engine is healthy.
