how can i tell if a 76 evenrude left the factory as a longshaft or was a shorty converted to longshaft? will be going on a 12 foot 15 inch transom dingy
its a long shaft, i heard that some motors left the factory as shortshafts only, and were converted to longshafts later using extensions for water, shaft etc. if thats the case it shouldnt be too hard to convert to shortshaft. otherwise im looking at tracking down a short shaft shaft, cutting the watertube as well as cutting down or finding the shifter. all adds up moneywise.
My long shafts have always had a one piece driveshaft.
Even the one that had started out as a shortshaft.
Never seen a driveshaft extension.
If you want to find out if yours has an extension added to the driveshaft, shiftshaft, and water tube, just drop the lower unit and have a look. Should take all of about 10 minutes.
