I see where a lot of people clean and shine the pontoon logs. I just wondered if there is a reason to do this other than for looks? Is there any danger in using Alumabrite to clean the crud off of them? If I clean them up how do I get the bottoms that sit on the bunk boards clean? Is there any danger of the Alumabrite getting into the carpet on the bunk boards and eating up the aluminum?

Its purely looks, while it can add a bit of speed. and as to the how, some jack them up and others take the off.

bring it to the local truck wash and get them cleaned up, they will be alot cleaner not shiney but for 50 or 60 bucks its worth it. the cleaner they use is effective on the toons. thats my 2 cents IM LAZY LOL !!!!!

Some people just like shiny aluminum, as Hawker said, you may get a tiny bit more speed but it is totally a looks thing.
It is also a huge ordeal and labor intensive, once you start you have to finish or you will have some nasty looking tubes.

If you want them actually polished you need a buffer and some kind of compound, Mothers or polishing rouge and hours of buffing.

You should get something like Shark Hide on them after to keep them shiny or it will only last a few months tops.

As to your question, clean the tubes and then rinse the boards good to dilute the toon brite and it won't hurt them at all, the only way to actually get where the runners are is to lift the boat off of them, not worth it in my opinion
