I have a 1959 Evinrude 10Hp motor. Everytime that I put it in forward and accelerate it pops back into neutrul. I am thinking that it has something to do with the shift linkage.

Re: shifting problems

Check your detents under the hood while it is not running (move the prop with your foot if necessary) while shifting and see if it is dropping into the slot completely. If not, in reverse or forward, see if the arm is rotating on the shaft. It may need tightening. If not, it could also be the shift bellcrank is wore out under the power head.

Have you had the foot off lately? May not have the shift rod bolt tightened. Not too tight to strip the brass, but could have overlooked it. Or previous owner could have.

Re: shifting problems

rude10, if none of the above post problems look obvious, then there is also the possibility that the dog clutch in the l/unit is bad letting the engine rev. Does it feel like you have hit something when this happens?

Re: shifting problems

Welcome rude10!

Does the boat still move at idle and then when you accelerate, you get rpms (motor revs) but the boat does not move any faster? If this is the case, probably a spun prop hub.

Let us know and pay attention to KB's last post. The clutch/gear lobes could be worn to the point that they slip out and in.....feels like your hitting a log in the water.
