Shifting problem

I think I hit something when going in reverse and now my 1980 Evinrude 115 is stuck in reverse gear. I can't start it and the motor (fly wheel, prop) is stuck. I have replaced a worn cable hoping that was the problem but the shift lever the cable attaches to on the engine won't budge. Is this a gear problem and what can I do to find out?

Re: Shifting problem

Did the motor stop abruptly? Its possible to pull the cover and manually disconnect the shift part of the cable. Then see if you cant take it out of gear by hand. At the same time, check to see free movement of the shift cable with it disconnected. Unable to start in gear is normal and is a safety feature built in. The more specific info you can give, the better.

Re: Shifting problem

Try gently rocking the prop back and forth (be sure key is OFF!) while someone tries to disengage from reverse (preferably from the shift arm on the motor).<br />Good Luck

Re: Shifting problem

I think I found the problem. I pulled the drain plug on the lower unit today and it looks like I busted a gear as their were metal shards all over the plug. What's the approximate cost for a shop to fix this? What would be the approximate cost for me to fix it and is this recommended?
