Shifting issues

I have a 1993 volvo 270 sp-c outdrive . I had a mechanic change my shift cable due to being hard to shift. After I got it back I noticed he had torn my bellows pulling the cable out. I decided not to let them change the bellows and do it myself. Everything has gone well. I took the boat out for a trial and now it shifts backwards. Forward is reverse and reverse is forward. I am assuming when I reinstalled the upper gear housing I did it incorrectly. Or is it possible he did something wrong installing the shift cable?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Shifting issues

Not much changes when you just replace the cable, but you have to disconnect linkage to pull the upper.

Compare your linkage to the decal inside the back cover of the drive. Then run on muffs and test the shifting to make sure it goes the right direction.

In case the sticker is missing, if everything is standard rotation, you want the linkage in the A position.

Re: Shifting issues

Thanks for the help.
I changed the linkage and it corrects the problem. But mine prior to all this happening was the opposite (I removed the linkage prior to bringing it to the mechanic to make sure it was the cable) and is counter rotating and also in the manual I have found the SP drive is the opposite. I am still wondering if the mechanic did something different with the shift cable or can you change the shift direction if it's in adifferent possition when you reinstall the upper gear housing. I have been unable to find anyone with knowledge of this old of a outdrive locally yet and your help is much appreciated.

Re: Shifting issues

Depending on the type shifter you have, it could be possible he put the cable on the wrong side.
